The purpose of this text is to present new examples of LP-spaces for 1 ≤ P ≤ ∞. This work has three reasons of interest. First, of course, it provides new LPspaces. Secondly, because certain constructions are based on new ideas and techniques with possibly other applications. Finally, especially in chapters four and five, crucial use is made of certain probabilistic results which have an independent importance.
This is the first of two books on methods and techniques in the calculus of variations. Contemporary arguments are used throughout the text to streamline and present in a unified way classical results, and to provide novel contributions at the forefront of the theory. This book addresses fundamental questions related to lower semicontinuity and relaxation of functionals within the unconstrained setting, mainly in L^p spaces. It prepares the ground for the second volume where the variational treatment of functionals involving fields and their derivatives will be undertaken within the framework of Sobolev spaces. This book is self-contained. All the statements are fully justified and proved, with the exception of basic results in measure theory, which may be found in any good textbook on the subject. It also contains several exercises. Therefore,it may be used both as a graduate textbook as well as a reference text for researchers in the field. Irene Fonseca is the Mellon College of Science Professor of Mathematics and is currently the Director of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests lie in the areas of continuum mechanics, calculus of variations, geometric measure theory and partial differential equations. Giovanni Leoni is also a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. He focuses his research on calculus of variations, partial differential equations and geometric measure theory with special emphasis on applications to problems in continuum mechanics and in materials science.
This book is devoted exclusively to Lebesgue spaces and their direct derived spaces. Unique in its sole dedication, this book explores Lebesgue spaces, distribution functions and nonincreasing rearrangement. Moreover, it also deals with weak, Lorentz and the more recent variable exponent and grand Lebesgue spaces with considerable detail to the proofs. These notes are devoted to the study of some classical problems in the Geometry of Banach spaces. The novelty lies in the fact that their solution relies heavily on techniques coming from Descriptive Set Theory. When can we ?nd a separable Banach space Y which has property (P) and contains an isomorphic copy of every member ofC? We will consider quite classical properties of Banach spaces, such as “- ing re?exive,” “having separable dual,” “not containing an isomorphic copy of c ,” “being non-universal,” etc. 0 It turns out that a positive answer to problem (Q), for any of the above mentioned properties, is possible if (and essentially only if) the classC is “simple.” The “simplicity” ofC is measured in set theoretic terms. Precisely, if the classC is analytic in a natural “coding” of separable Banach spaces, then we can indeed ?nd a separable space Y which is universal for the class C and satis?es the requirements imposed above.

Pierre Grisvard, one of the most distinguished French mathematicians, died on April 22, 1994. A Conference was held in November 1994 out of which grew the invited articles contained in this volume. All of the papers are related to functional analysis applied to partial differential equations, which was Grisvard's specialty. Indeed his knowledge of this area was extremely broad. He began his career as one of the very first students of Jacques Louis Lions, and in 1965, he presented his "State Thesis" on interpolation spaces, using in particular, spectral theory for linear operators in Banach spaces. After 1970, he became a specialist in the study of optimal regularity for par tial differential equations with boundary conditions. He studied singulari ties coming from coefficients, boundary conditions, and mainly non-smooth domains, and left a legacy of precise results which have been published in journals and books. Pierre Grisvard spent most of his career as a full professor at the University of Nice, where he started in 1967. For shorter or longer periods, he visited several foreign countries, and collaborated with some of the most famous mathematicians in his field. He was also an excellent organizer and directed a large number of Ph.D. students. Finally, this volume contains a bibliography of Grisvard's works as well as one paper which he wrote and which has not been published before.
