Excerpt from Natural Regeneration in Two Central Idaho Grand Fir Habitat Types Though six conifer species occur in the grand fir zone, the importance of individual species depends on the habitat type (table By definition the climax Spe cies, grand fir, is found throughout the two habitat types; however, Douglas-fir (pseudotsuga menziesii) and ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa) are also com mon. Engelmann spruce (picea engelmannii), west ern larch (larix occidentalis), and lodgepole pine (pinus contorta) occur in some areas. Western larch and lodgepole pine are both early seral. Western larch grows most commonly on warmer, more moist sites. Lodgepole pine occurs primarily on cooler sites, and when it is found in large quantities, it may indicate a frost pocket.
