The World Conservation Union brings together states, government agencies, and a diverse range of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in a unique world partnership that seeks to influence, encourage, and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature as well as to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. This book contains case studies in environmental communication and education that were presented at the General Assembly workshop of the World Conservation Union held in January 1994. The book is divided into three sections: the first seeks to provide some bases for planning education and communication, the second looks at NGO education programs, and the third addresses planning education at the national level. Papers include: (1) "Influences on Pro-environmental Practices" (Joy Palmer); (2) "Behaviour, Social Marketing, and the Environment" (William Smith); (3) "A Basis for Environmental Education in the Sahel" (Raphael Ndiaye); (4) "Communication: An Instrument of Government Policy" (Agnes Gomis and Frits Hesselink); (5) "Seabird Conservation on the North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence: The Effects of Education on Attitude and Behaviour towards a Marine Resource" (Kathleen Blanchard); (6) "Environmental Education Programmes for Natural Areas: A Brazilian Case Study" (Suzana Padua); (7) "Addressing Urban Issues Through Environmental Education" (Shyamala Krishna); (8) "The CAMPFIRE Programme in Zimbabwe: Changes of Attitudes and Practices of Rural Communities towards Natural Resources" (Taparendava Maveneke); (9) "IUCN in Environmental Education in Western Africa and the Sahel" (Monique Trudel); (10) "A Matter of Motivation" (Ibrahim Thiaw); (11) "Education and Communication Support to the Establishment of Protected Area Systems" (Rutger-Jan Schoen); (12) "Canada: National Environmental Citizenship Initiative" (T. Arguably among the regions of the world most vulnerable to climate change, Asia has different mechanisms for Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) activities. This title provides 19 case studies, from 13 countries and regions in Asia, that highlight different aspects of CCA-DRR entry points.

This book studies the role of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as an advocate for greater environmental responsibility and analyses the major achievements and outcomes of two landmark conferences – Stockholm (1972) and Rio (1992) – which set the agenda for the future role of the UNEP. It discusses the UNEP’s evolution, objectives and the problems of differing perspectives within, its ability to deal with environmental challenges, its skill in successfully carrying out the mandate and contributing to the pursuit of environmental security. The book also looks at five developing countries of South Asia, namely India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, to study the role of the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), which plays an active role in the management of environmental issues and constitutes an important landmark in regional cooperation in South Asia. The author evaluates the contributions of National Conservation Strategies not only in creating environmental awareness but also in strengthening environmental governance architecture by integrating Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals into the development planning of these South Asian countries under study. Drawing on in-depth research and interviews, this book will be of interest to students, teachers, researchers, policymakers and strategic analysts working in the fields of environment studies, sustainable development, environmental science and policy, environmental law and governance, geography, politics and international affairs.
This national level study conducted by Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bioresources (ANSAB) and its consortium partners on behalf of the Multi Stakeholder Forestry Programme (MSFP) of Nepal, assesses and analyses the current status and future potential of developing economically viable and socially and environmentally responsible forest-based industries leading to sustainable, green and inclusive development model in Nepal. The study has prioritized forest enterprises along four major subsectors, namely, timber, non-timber forest products, ecosystem services (especially ecotourism and carbon) and forest bioenergy and developed a thorough understanding of the current status and future potential of the private sector involvement and investment in these subsectors along with the development of appropriate intervention strategies.
