Joe R. Eagleman, Ph.D. tells in this autobiography about the many facets of his life. His early education was in a one-room rural grade school. His invention of an artificial tornado that extended from the ceiling of his laboratory at the University of Kansas resulted in local interest as well as international filming from a news crew from Japan. It later became the subject of a lawsuit between Universal Studios in Hollywood and the Volvo Company. After he was told by Universal Studios to "Name your price" he became involved in this successful lawsuit. A 50 foot version of his tornado was the main attraction in the Twister Building at Universal Studios Park in Orlando Florida from 1998 to 2015. Another copy of his tornado was created with his help by Ned Kahn at the Exploratorium in San Francisco where it continues to attract viewers and has for many decades. This autobiography tells of his early life on the farm as one of 12 children who was told by an older brother that he would never amount to anything. He tells of experiences in the one room rural grade school and of dealing with a bully on the playground. It includes his development as a scientist, artist, musician, luthier, marksman, taxidermist and other endeavors. His unique journey to becoming a Professor and Research Scientist is described. His career resulted in one who had experiments on Skylab and who influenced many thousands of students through his teaching and books and who made national changes to tornado safety guidelines. He initiated and developed the program in Atmospheric Science at KU that has now grown into a full department where Joe Eagleman Scholarships are given to worthy students.
The second, expanded edition of this acclaimed memoir by an Alzheimer’s caregiver living with his father during his final year includes a new introduction that illustrates the immense toll of the disease, important lessons from the author’s experience, and a readers' guide. Joe Thorndike was managing editor of Life at the height of its popularity immediately following World War II. He was the founder of American Heritage and Horizon magazines, the author of three books, and the editor of a dozen more. But at age ninety-two, in the space of six months he stopped reading or writing or carrying on detailed conversations. He could no longer tell time or make a phone call. He was convinced that the governor of Massachusetts had come to visit and was in the refrigerator. Over six million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s, and like many of them, Joe Thorndike’s one great desire was to remain in his own house. To honor his wish, his son John left his own home and moved into his father’s upstairs bedroom on Cape Cod. For a year, in a house filled with file cabinets, photos, and letters, John explored his father’s mind, his parents’ divorce, and his mother’s secrets. The Last of His Mind is the bittersweet account of a son’s final year with his father and a candid portrait of an implacable disease. It’s the ordeal of Alzheimer’s that draws father and son close, closer than they have been since John was a boy. At the end, when Joe’s heart stops beating, John’s hand is on his chest, and a story of painful decline has become a portrait of deep family ties, caregiving, and love.
In a world devastated by an alien invasion, Maki, a courageous boy with a secret, holds the key to stopping the Chairman's merciless campaign. With his future homeworld destroyed and a new life in a distant solar system, Maki's father urges him to keep the truth hidden. But Maki's determination knows no bounds. Against all odds, Maki infiltrates the secret service's teleportation room, stumbling upon classified information that propels him into the role of the youngest agent in their ranks. His heroic deeds garner praise, but deep down, he faces an agonizing dilemma: he cannot save his world alone. Bound by a promise to his father, Maki finds himself torn between loyalty and the dire fate of an entire population. Will he dare to defy his father's trust and seek the help he desperately needs? Or will he sacrifice everything in a race against time, knowing that the chairman's massacre will unfold once more? Invaders of the Firesnake is a thrilling tale of bravery, sacrifice, and the resilience of a young hero determined to rewrite the course of history. This captivating story is the third instalment in the second edition of the Plan8 Slaves series. It lays the foundation for the colonisation and de-radiation project of a red-sun world which was tragically hit by a nuclear war, forty years before, as told in Rayner's Cyborg Assassin trilogy.

In Holly James's newest rom-com, sparks ignite as a pair of broke exes get locked in a house together on a reality show for a chance to win a million dollars, a second-chance romance that perfectly captures the absurd sincerity of made-for-TV love. Olivia Martin and Chuck Walsh have chemistry. Too much chemistry, perhaps. Their every interaction as a couple either lights the house up with sexual tension or burns it down with anger. After one huge, very public fight, they finally break up for good. Or so they think. Someone was filming their dramatic argument in the street and—because Olivia’s parents were Hollywood royalty, and because Chuck’s an actor whose star is on the rise—the video goes viral. When Name Your Price, a reality game show, sees the footage, they invite Olivia and Chuck to shoot a very unusual challenge: Live locked in a house together for one month and they will be paid a million dollars. Each. Olivia really needs the money if she's going to keep her beloved grandmother in her nursing home, and Chuck is desperate for any chance to win Olivia back. So the game is on—even as the show tries to pluck every nerve with only one bed, one bathroom, and a set of rules that will lose them money if broken—including no touching. With stakes that have never been higher and their explosive chemistry at a fever pitch, can Chuck and Olivia keep it together (and their hands off each other) for one month? Find out next week on Name Your Price!
