How did the universe begin and how will it end? What happens to us when we die? Do intelligent beings exist elsewhere in our galaxy and beyond? The Edge of Science addresses these and many other questions that have bewildered and perplexed humanity for centuries. Some of these enigmas have been solved through the ingenuity of their investigators; others remain a mystery and have given rise to equally bizarre speculations. From the Tunguska explosion of 1908 to the enigma of the Moon's origin, from the possibility of time travel to the search for zero-point energy, author Alan Baker examines the many theories that have been presented to account for the world's most enduring mysteries. Each chapter deals with an enigma that has caused wonder, excitement or fear to all who have pondered it, including: the discovery of strange fossils that hint at an unknown early history of humanity; anomalous structures photographed on the Moon and Mars; the mystery of dark matter and dark energy; and strange disappearances of people and objects. Join Alan Baker as he embarks on a strange, stimulating and sometimes frightening journey to The Edge of Science.
"A little over four decades ago... a monumental literary classic entitled MYSTERIES OF TIME AND SPACE was first published. Its author, the prolific, legendary, not to mention one of the most tireless, pioneering investigative journalists in the 'truth is out there' field of all things unexplained, is the one and only Brad Steiger. Steiger has compiled in this book a truly comprehensive catalogue of some of the most perplexing, thought-provoking cases ever documented. Even after all of these years, here is a book that still remains not only an enduring classic but also still a source of valuable and relevant information and insight. This is an extraordinary tome by an extraordinary author who has, through the years, delved deeply into a wide range of some of the most remarkable, chilling and riveting case histories and accounts of the unexplained. There's nothing obsolete, passe, or "old hat" about MYSTERIES OF TIME AND SPACE. It continues to stand as a thought-provoking landmark classic, and what can you expect from an author who has either authored or co-authored some 181 books to date, with over 17 million copies in print?" - Brent Raynes, editor of Alternate Perceptions"
Adam Dalgluish is called to the elegant Steen Psychiatric Clinic to investigate why the head of the clinic, Enid Bolan was found with a chisel through her heart.
A classic account of the relationship between the human brain and the human mind Can the mind be explained by what we know about the brain? Is a person’s being determined by their body alone or by their mind and body as separate elements? In this incisive and engaging book, Wilder Penfield, whose work pioneered such research, shares insights into these and other questions, providing an in-depth look at the function of the brain and its relationship to the action of the mind. With a foreword by Charles W. Hendel, an introduction by William Feindel, and reflections by Sir Charles Symonds, The Mystery of the Mind is Penfield’s compelling personal account of his experiences as a neurosurgeon and scientist observing the inner workings of the brain in conscious patients.
A LIVELY EXPLORATION OF THE BIGGEST QUESTIONS IN SCIENCE How Did the Universe Begin? The Big Bang has been the accepted theory for decades, but does it explain everything? How Did Life on Earth Get Started? What triggered the cell division that started the evolutionary chain? Did life come from outer space, buried in a chunk of rock? What is Gravity? Newton's apple just got the arguments started, Einstein made things more complicated. Just how does gravity fit in with quantum theory? What Is the Inside of the Earth Like? What exactly is happening beneath our feet, and can we learn enough to help predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions? How Do We Learn Language? Is language acquisition an inborn biological ability, or does every child have to start from scratch? Is There a Missing Link? The story of human evolution is not complete. In addition to hoaxes such as "Piltdown Man" and extraordinary finds such as "Lucy," many puzzles remain. What, in the end, do we mean by a "missing link"?
Unraveling the Universe's Mysteries offers a rare glimpse into scientific mysteries that have baffled scientists over the last century. It bravely takes the reader to the edge of science where proof is scarce, and the line between physics and metaphysics blurs. Explore the latest science theories regarding: What caused the Big Bang? Is there a multiverse? What role does string theory play in modern science? Is time travel possible? Is dark energy/dark matter real? Are there other Earths? Are we alone? What ultimate fate does humankind face? Can science prove God exists?
A new look at the first few seconds after the Big Bang—and how research into these moments continues to revolutionize our understanding of our universe Scientists in the past few decades have made crucial discoveries about how our cosmos evolved over the past 13.8 billion years. But there remains a critical gap in our knowledge: we still know very little about what happened in the first seconds after the Big Bang. At the Edge of Time focuses on what we have recently learned and are still striving to understand about this most essential and mysterious period of time at the beginning of cosmic history. Delving into the remarkable science of cosmology, Dan Hooper describes many of the extraordinary and perplexing questions that scientists are asking about the origin and nature of our world. Hooper examines how we are using the Large Hadron Collider and other experiments to re-create the conditions of the Big Bang and test promising theories for how and why our universe came to contain so much matter and so little antimatter. We may be poised to finally discover how dark matter was formed during our universe’s first moments, and, with new telescopes, we are also lifting the veil on the era of cosmic inflation, which led to the creation of our world as we know it. Wrestling with the mysteries surrounding the initial moments that followed the Big Bang, At the Edge of Time presents an accessible investigation of our universe and its origin.
"Mysteries of the Time, as an Entity," written by Mr. Feroz Baig, an engineer but to my view a prolific writer and a physicist. He wrote ten chapters with entirely new conjectures, hypothesis, postulates, followed by intuitive approach with extensive debate of the current problems of the Universe and its diverse descriptions. His approach is academic and indeed pertinent to reflect issues which most of the eminent scientists have made it controversial. He described "time" evolution as a physical happening on the basis of which: we can define the Space, especially the hyperbolic Space. The phenomenon of Big-Bang theory, according to him, is a manifestation of "time" evolution, due to which Universe is created and that there is always an end to "creation", i. e., through condensation of the Universe, which would result into "implosion". He supported his arguments with diverse fascinating examples, thus his thesis is unique and will provide a new dimension to deciphering unexplored characteristics of the Universe. To me, he is an extraordinary good physicist, because he made his choice for exploring new vistas of knowledge in astrophysics. He presented an elegant and an offensive, a marvelous alternative model which differs in many respect with contributions made by the eminent Scientists till to-date. He disagrees with the notion of Quarks, because these particles' behavior and their associated dimensional energy fall in the last-end region of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. He is also of the opinion that the whirling and swirling in the nuclear structure is due to thinning dimensional but that of highly condensed field, as a consequence of which, unification in the nuclear structure is happening, and one such highly condensed field is also existing near the vicinity of the Black-Hole. Needless to mention, his extraordinary revelations and intuitive approach have made us to rethink and rejuvenate our efforts to review the research findings made till to-date. His manuscript is decisive to infer lot of new ideas which could be considered as a tool for the Scientists to review their findings and so come up with rationality. The proper disseminations of his ideas, through this book, will help restore the mysteries and Nature of the Universe. He also touched the very nature of particles and so compared them with the behavior of the Universe with sharp demarcations, of course, based on three suggestive geometries starting from Euclidean, Gauss, Geometry of curvature or curved surfaces, differential, Riemannian (dealing with invariant systems) and thereafter ending upon implosion, thus making all types of geometries to collapse into nothingness. The space to him is felt due to physical happening of time's fabrics as of its configuration, where everything has to return to its "origin" with the phenomena of implosion. In his notion, Gravity is originated from a singularity containing comparatively condensed particles which he deliberated with the to-days ordinary experiments of slowing of time period; and is in agreement with the existence of gravitational field and indeed of accumulation of the quantum gravity, a term coined by Dr. ALBERT EINSTEIN. According to him the Universe is expanding into the increasingly conical slices, which are arranged in the magnetic and its lines of force shaped structure, and so will be again reversed down, simulating to it there like the Black-Hole (A cyclic implosion creator). This presentation is unique, experimentally in conformity with his conjectures and ideas, splendid in logical deliberation, consistent with critical analysis of previous findings and, of course, a new discovery in the discipline of the physics. Hope and am sure that his findings would pave a new era in our understanding of the Universe. June 14, 2010.
