When I first started writing Mom and Dads story, I never thought that it would take so long to finish. At first I just wanted to have Dads poems written down on paper. I did that, and then I decided to finally to make a song for each poem, which I tried to do, but I think that I didnt make a song for each poem. The reason is that I wanted to send the story as soon as I could because I am old and am afraid that I might not be able to make the book if I kept on adding more and more to Mom and Dads story.
The guitar-based music known as bachata was born in the Dominican Republic in the early 1960s. Brought to the U.S. by Dominican migrants, it has continually developed to reflect the changing tastes of fans and musicians. Bachata became increasingly popular among younger Dominican Americans in the 1990s and 2000s. This generation of artists reshaped the music, blending multiple genres with Spanish and English lyrics to reflect their multicultural reality. In this book, 27 artists share their personal and collective insights into how modern bachata provides an intimate representation of what it means to be Dominican, Latino, multicultural, and bilingual in a transnational setting.
"Both noted and new scholars reweave the fabric of collective, family, and individual history with a legacy of agency and activism in the borderlands in these twenty-one original selections. Contributors explore themes of homeland, sexuality, language, violence, colonialism, and political resistance within the most recent frameworks of Chicana/Chicano inquiry. Art as social critique, culture as a human right, labor activism, racial plurality, Indigenous knowledge, and strategies of decolonization all vitalize these selections edited by one of the country's most respected historians of the borderlands, Antonia Castaneda.
