Excerpt from Personal Recollections of the War of the Rebellion This fourth volume of papers and sermons comprises papers presented at the banquets which follow the regular stated meetings of the Commandery, and sermons preached before the Commandery, as a part of the annual Church service which, during the past few years, has been held in commemoration of the surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865, an event that brought peace within our borders and that cemented once more the union of States comprising our great Republic. One object of the foundation of this Order, set forth in our Constitution, is - "to cherish the memories and associations of the war waged in defence of the unity and indivisibility of the Republic..." There is no way in which this result can be more effectually accomplished than by bringing together the personal recollections of those who took part in that great struggle. These narratives of personal experiences are interesting, not only because they bring us in contact with events of which the narrators themselves were a part, but also because, as a relation of facts and incidents based upon the personal observations and experiences of participants, they bring us much closer to the actual events of the War of the Rebellion than the more formal statements of the professional historian. Many of the incidents referred to, which are more or less of a personal character, would never have become matter of record but for these papers, nevertheless they give life to the accounts that are presented in the official reports. New York, February, 1912. The seeming paragon; To whom the better elements And kindly stars have given A form so fair, that, like the air, 'Tis less of earth than heaven. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 My War Reminiscences as originally written were not intended for publication. During all the years sub sequent to the close of the War I had been asked from time to time by my daughters, Lottie and Edith, to write down the stories I had told them of my war experiences; I had written from time to time in complying with their wishes, descriptions of many of the movements and battles, and as I progressed the work became interesting to myself, until it finally assumed the form of a complete story from the beginning to the end, and still it was my purpose that there should be but an edition of two vol umes, typewritten and bound, for my daughters only. Excerpt from Personal Recollections of the War of the Rebellion: Addresses Delivered Before the New York Commandery of the Loyal Legion of the United States, 1883-1891The purpose of the New York Commandery in printing this collection of personal reminiscences of its members, of the most mighty struggle of modern times, in which they were participants, is to preserve their valuable experiences and observations for the benefit of future generations, as well as for the information of readers of our day who cannot enjoy the privilege of listening to the delivery of the addresses a privilege confined to the comrades of the Commandery. For many years five meetings have been annually held at Delmonico's, at each of which a paper has been read, or an address delivered. The most important of these, beginning with an account of Gettysburg, a greater battle than Water loo, and concluding with a history of the Loyal Legion, by ex-president Hayes, are contained in this volume. The New York Commandery is not, of course, responsible for opinions expressed, or for facts stated in the various addresses included in this pioneer volume of the series, in which many a veteran of the Commandery has, like Gold smith's old soldier in the Deserted Village.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
