From the author-illustrator of The Book of Mistakes comes a gorgeous picture book about caring for your own heart and living with kindness and empathy. My heart is a window. My heart is a slide. My heart can be closed...or opened up wide. Some days your heart is a puddle or a fence to keep the world out. But some days it is wide open to the love that surrounds you. With lyrical text and breathtaking art, My Heart empowers all readers to listen to the guide within in this ode to love and self-acceptance.
A poetry collection that both illustrates what mindfulness is and encourages young, growing minds to be present, from poet and educator Georgia Heard, with art by Isabel Roxas. Poets have long observed the world in a mindful way. They point out beauty we might have missed, draw our attention to our inner thoughts, and call us to see our society in new ways. But as daily life become more and more chaotic, children grow distracted. According to the CDC, 9.4% of children have ADHD and 7% have anxiety/depression. And these numbers continue to climb. As treatment doctors recommend healthy eating, physical activity, plenty of sleep, and mindfulness techniques. Georgia Heard is a poet and educator—and she has long had her own meditation practice. In My Thoughts Are Clouds, she uses poetry to demonstrate what mindfulness is and gives kids—and their parents and teachers—accessible ways to learn mindfulness tools.
"The storm outside rages on, while the peace inside brings me calm..." Make believe a dream, create friendships that last, and strive to not be broken. Three tid-bits to live by in this journey called life as you learn to be the best of you. "Becoming Me: Poems of the Heart and Mind" takes you on a journey and explores through poetry and photographs, how dreaming, creating, and striving can open your mind and allow your heart to see.
I started writing poetry when I was seventeen years old; I found out that when you put your thoughts into words sometimes magic happens. I'm not talking about genies popping out of a bottle or anything like that, but in how I see things clearer and how beautiful this world truly is. I found out later in life how much easier it was to find a date in high school. I used to try and talk to girls and found out sometimes I'd get a little gun shy and pass up my chance. Then one day, I wrote a poem for this girl I had my eye on. I walked up to her and handed her the poem and then walked away. Later she approached me and we went out on a date. I found the magic potion to breaking the ice (so to speak) was a piece of paper and a writing pen. I learned how to put my thoughts down on a piece of paper, which later I put into a blank book that I would write my poems in. After I was told by at least fifty or so people that I should share these poems to others, I sat down and sorted out the poems I thought could touch your heart the best. I hope my poems are inspirational enough to help you create your own book.
"It is not possible to read this collection of poems without being simultaneously touched by the authenticity of the experiences they recount... many of the poems in the collection deliver a stinging critique of America..." ~Dr. Timothy Chin, Ph. D., University of Michigan "Open-minded readers will see that the author's poems uncover inequities while also communicating encouragement of tolerance between the haves and the have-nots... we might have different challenges, backgrounds and life experiences but we can all relate to the rhythmic, heartfelt poems..." ~Dr. Iris Baxter, Ph. D., University of Southern California

My inspiration for my poems comes from everywherepeople, movies, my children, everyday life. My poems are mostly about love, life, destiny, fate, emotions and feelings. I feel that in our world we need to feel more and care more about what is happening around us. We just get so busy, we dont stop to smell the flowers or take much notice of anybody else. We are in such a rush to get from point A to point Z without ever thinking which way we have to go. I would like people to see that my book of poems is inspirationalto love more, care more, take the time to get to know someone for who and what they are, inspire yourself to inspire others, encourage people to love more, care more. Be all you can be, be more in the presents of LIFE. And finally, SMILE. Life is really worth LIVING. Give yourself the chance to breathe and shout out loud IM ALIVE and LOVING IT. Thank you. LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.
