Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 1 of 2 There are, of course, higher and lower degrees of this faith; its object is one more or less worthy: but it is in all cases the belief in certain unseen eternal facts, by keeping true to which a man must in the long run succeed. Must; because he is more or less in harmony with heaven, and earth, and the Maker thereof, and has therefore fighting on his side a great portion of the universe perhaps the Whole for as he who breaks one commandment of the law is guilty of the whole, because he denies the fount of all law, so he who with his whole Soul keeps one commandment of it is likely to be in harmony with the whole, because he testifies of the fount of all law. I shall devote a few pages to the story of an old hero, of a man of like passions with ourselves of one who had the most intense and awful sense of the un seen laws, and succeeded mightily thereby of one who had hard struggles with a flesh and blood which made him at times forget those laws, and failed mightily thereby: of one Whom God so loved that He caused each slightest sin, as with David, to bring its own punishment with it, that While the flesh was delivered over to Satan, the man himself might be saved in the Day of the Lord; of one, finally, of whom nine hun dred and ninety-nine men out of a thousand may say, I have done worse deeds than he: but I have never done as good ones.' Excerpt from My Miscellanies, Vol. 2 of 2 The curious legend connected with the birth of this Adopted Son, and the facts relating to his extraordinary career in after life, are derived from the Records of the French Police of the period. In this instance, and in the instances of those other papers in the present collection which deal with foreign incidents and characters, while the facts of each narrative exist in print, the form in which the narrative is cast is of my own devising. If these facts had been readily accessible to readers in general, the papers in question would not have been reprinted. But the scarce and curious books from which my materials are derived, have been long since out of print, and are, in all human probability, never likely to be published again. Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 2 of 3: Stories and Essays I pass over the dinner, which was doubtless very interesting to them, but very uninteresting to me, especially as I knew I was only stationed at the table to satisfy a scruple of society, and a dozen scruples of my precise relative. After the cloth was removed and the tea was brought up, they settled down to a regular evening at back-gammon, while I was left to amuse myself in a distant corner with my box of paints; and I did so by drawing highly-coloured caricatures of my aunt and her adorer. When I was tired of this sport, about nine o'clock at night. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 2 Heart of Jesus, is it or is it not an object of divine worship If the answer be, It is then the Archbishop is justified out of the mouth of the Guardian. If the answer be, It is not: then the Guardian and its theo logy fall into the very pit which it dug for the Arch bishop of Westminster. Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 2: Prose and Verse Dear Sir, - As there appears to be a revived zeal for commentatorship on Shakspeare, I may be perhaps allowed to roll my tub among the rest; and the first service I wish to perform is to rid, or at least to give some reasons for ridding, all future editors of a superfluous swelling in the shape of Dr. Farmer's Essay on the Learning of Shakspeare, which has long been a regular encumbrance on the variorum editions. In the subjoined letter, if you will be so good as to print it, your readers, who I hope are in number equal to the whole reading public of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Colonies, - "From sunny Indus to the Pole, - will find my reasons for not thinking highly of the Master of Emmanuel, or his Shakspearian labours. The critical clique to which he belonged was peculiarly absurd; and we have only to cast a glance upon his face, as preserved in an engraving by Harding, to see that the feeble smirk of fatheaded and scornful blockheadism self-satisfied, with that peddling pedantry of the smallest order which entitled its possessor to look down with patronising pity on the loftiest genius, is its prevailing feature. Excerpt from My Miscellanies, Vol. 1 of 2 The various papers of which the following collection is composed, were most of them written some years since, and were all originally published - with many more, which I have not thought it desirable to reprint - in 'Household Words, ' and in the earlier volumes of 'All the Year Round.' They were fortunate enough to be received with favour by the reader, at the period of their first appearance, and were though worthy in many instances of being largely quoted from in other journals. After careful selection and revision, they are now collected in book-form; having been so arranged, in contrast with each other, as to present specimens of all the shorter compositions which I have contributed in past years to periodical literature. Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 2 of 3: Literary and Religious Thus is displayed the great truth, that the Written Word is avouched by Jesus Christ, the Incarnate word that it is His will that it should be opened in the eyes Of all, to be seen, heard, and read by all; and that the Holy Scriptures are delivered by Him to the Apostolic Ministry of His Church, in order to be guarded, interpreted, and preached by her to all the world. Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 1 of 2: Literary Historical Their author has been so good as to yield to my importunity, and permit me to make a collee tion of these opuscula, he himself standing aside in benevolent neutrality. The responsibility for the selection - and for the original importunity is therefore mine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
