Follow the path of budo—the warrior’s code of conduct—as it unfolds in the life of karate master Kancho Joko Ninomiya. Grandmaster of Enshin Karate and creator of the Sabaki Challenge, Kancho Ninomiya reveals how the spirit of feudal Japanese warriors inspired him as a boy and continues to shape his life as a man. My Journey in Karate describes the rigors of Ninomiya’s early training in judo before a chance meeting introduced him to an innovative karate sensei who changed his life. In addition to Kancho Ninomiya’s own story, My Journey in Karate includes an extended section of Ninomiya’s reflections on training, competition, strategy, and the lessons of karate both in and out of the dojo.
A biography of Japanese karate master Joko Ninomiya, who lives and teaches in the United States.
Part historical account, part training notes and part philosophical essay, the author writes about his training with Grandmaster Shimabukuro Ezio on the island of Okinawa.
Paul, born the morning of Halloween 1945, began a life-long struggle with self-image, self-esteem and attention duration. With Attention Deficit Disorder in full throttle, his life was challenged from the very beginning. By age 17, he was a high school drop-out with questionable prospects. He joined the United States Air Force, believing it could lift him out of his current predicament. Managing to get through USAF tech school, he served his country for four years. Discharged and now married, he decided to attempt college and continue his struggle. One evening a friend invited him to a karate class held in a friendas garage. Paulas wife encouraged him to try it out. Paulas world changed forever. He spent the next twenty-five years pursuing excellence in his art, dodging and weaving through the political maelstroms and personalities existing in the martial arts. This is the story.
After 25 years of teaching karate and researching the "old ways" I finally left all of it behind and continued on my journey alone. No longer teaching or involving myself at all in the commercialism of "modern karate" I simply trained. During these years I gathered many thoughts and some disgruntled complaints. In this book I attempt to put these thoughts to paper. They are simply my notes and thoughts expanded upon and presented so that anyone who knows me might know what I have been up to and why I no longer teach or train with the modern establishment. My book comes with a warning because I am at times brutally honest. I disagree with much of the showboating, money making, "sport" aspects and modernization of karate; changing it to nothing more than a childs babysitting service and black belt mill. So these are my thoughts and opinions. Sometimes they may not make sense but then again... they're just thoughts. Again these are only my opinions. I'm not necessarily saying that anyone is doing anything wrong only that quite often they are saying and doing two different things. They have their brand and I have mine. I'll apologize up front for anyone I may insult. It truly isn't my intention to do so; but at times it can't be helped. Hopefully we can all remain friends.
