"A young doctor and his wife find life in the village of a lost tribe in the Amazon Basin more of a challenge than they expected. They attempt to establish a mission and a clinic treating a tribe with centuries of ancient customs. Encounters [with] wild predators, flesh-eating fish, [and] a tribe of huge aggressive women only add to the difficult and exciting adventure facing them every day. Satisfaction comes when after a lifetime of struggle an Indian girl and her half-caste child, who was delivered by the doctor, become the next generation of missionaries."--Page 4 of cover.

Set in the ancient Upper Egyptian village of Karnak against the backdrop of the British campaigns in Sudan, the Second World War, and the war in Palestine, The Collar and the Bracelet is the stunning saga of the Bishari family a family ripped apart by the violence of history, the dark conduits of human desire, and the rigid social conventions of village life. In a series of masterful narrative circles and repetitions, the novella traces the grim intrigues of Hazina al-Bishari and the inexorable destinies of her son, the exile and notorious bandit Mustafa, her daughter Fahima, tortured by guilt and secret passion, and the tragic doom of her beautiful granddaughter Nabawiya. Yahya Taher Abdullah's haunting prose distills the rhythmic lyricism of the folk story and weaves it into a uniquely modernist narrative tapestry of love and revenge that beautifully captures the timeless pharaonic landscapes of Upper Egypt and the blind struggles of its inhabitants against poverty, exploitation, and time themes that are echoed and amplified in the short stories included in this volume, which span the breadth of Abdullah's tragically short career as one of Egypt's most brilliant writers of modern fiction.

Expressions Through the Years is a selected collection of poems and short stories written by the author over many years. They express his thoughts on given family members and on observations made as life has been lived. The volume begins with a thoughtful, penetrating and deeply moving poem, “An Ode to the Great God Pan,” dedicated to his Uncle J. D. The author draws upon his fascination with Greek and African mythology in depicting images of strength, greed, weakness, and vulnerability as the main figure in the poem lives through his experiences. A number of the poems are written as the author reflects on the unique qualities of family members and his reflections of the beauty of nature. The short stories are diametrically opposed to each other in both form and content. One depicts the harshness of life lived in urban cities and how one can easily get caught up in a web of destruction. Whereas, the second story illuminates a theme dealing with the softer side of life as the protagonist observes nature and the other creatures that share this universe. Initially, although the works of this volume were basically written for the writer’s own indulgence with language, he has eventually wanted to share these works with others. Being a New Yorker, the works within often echo the sounds, sights, and rich aura of the urban experience.
