This edited collection presents state-of-the-art reviews of the latest developments in multisensory packaging design. Bringing together leading researchers and practitioners working in the field, the contributions consider how our growing understanding of the human senses, as well as new technologies, will transform the way in which we design, interact with, and experience food and beverage, home and personal care, and fast-moving consumer products packaging. These 2 volumes constitute the selected papers of the 7th International Conference, CHIRA 2023, held Rome, Italy, during November 16–17, 2023. The 14 full papers and the 29 short papers presented in these books were carefully reviewed and selected from 69 submissions. The papers selected contribute to the advancement of research and practical applications of human-technology and human-computer interaction. Different aspects of Computer-Human Interaction were covered in four parallel tracks: human factors for interactive systems, research, and applications; interactive devices; interaction design; and adaptive and intelligent systems.
Immersive virtual reality technology has been developing extremely dynamically in the last decade. One of the reasons is the impressive progress in 3D graphics and the increasing accessibility of hardware with sufficient computational power to smoothly render high-quality 3D environments. Virtual reality overwhelms the user by replacing the physical world with a computer-generated 3D scenario. Its power lies in embodied, complex, and vivid scenarios rich in context and dynamic engagement of the sensorimotor system, which provokes more naturalistic behavioural and physiological responses than abstract stimuli. Congruent multisensory stimulation builds virtual experience and makes us forget about the real world. Strong presence and embodiment illusions can cause deep cognitive, affective, and behavioural changes, leading to enhanced learning, perspective-taking, and treatments. Some types of sensory input have received much more attention than others. This includes mainly visual and auditory cues, but also, to some extent, nociception and touch. However, the human sensory system is much richer and more complex and includes many other senses, such as smell, and taste, but also thermoception, interoception, equilibrioception, and others. Most VR experiences are built on rich audiovisual cues since these two modalities allow us to perceive the virtual world and interact with it. For example, touch, although extremely important, is often represented in a reductionist form, and other modalities, such as the sense of smell or thermoception, are completely ignored.

The authors of The Perfect Meal examine all of the elements that contribute to the diners experience of a meal (primarily at a restaurant) and investigate how each of the diners senses contributes to their overall multisensory experience. The principal focus of the book is not on flavor perception, but on all of the non-food and beverage factors that have been shown to influence the diners overall experience. Cake products with highly acceptable flavor and mouthfeel are not always successful in the marketplace. Sales of identical cake products sold in two different bakery shops often differ. Patrons’ choices of specific cake items differ depending on menu designs at restaurants. Such examples suggest that consumer behavior related to eating, preparing, or purchasing foods and beverages is typically complex, dynamic, and sensitive to environmental cues surrounding them. The nine original research articles and two systematic review articles addressed in this book provide recent informative and insightful findings on how sensory cues related to eating/drinking environmental contexts can serve as “sensory nudges” that induce healthy eating and drinking along with consumer satisfaction.
