In the current educational environment, there has been a shift towards online learning as a replacement for the traditional in-person classroom experience. With this new environment comes new technologies, benefits, and challenges for providing courses to students through an entirely digital environment. With this shift comes the necessary research on how to utilize these online courses and how to develop effective online educational materials that fit student needs and encourage student learning, motivation, and success. The optimization of these online tools requires a deeper look into curriculum, instructional design, teaching techniques, and new models for student assessment and evaluation. Information on how to create valuable online course content, engaging lesson plans for the digital space, and meaningful student activities online are only a few of many current topics of interest for promoting student achievement through online learning. The Research Anthology on Developing Effective Online Learning Courses provides multiple perspectives on how to develop engaging and effective online learning courses in the wake of the rapid digitalization of education. This book includes topics focused on online learners, online course content, effective online instruction strategies, and instructional design for the online environment. This reference work is ideal for curriculum developers, instructional designers, IT consultants, deans, chairs, teachers, administrators, academicians, researchers, and students interested in the latest research on how to create online learning courses that promote student success.
In the last two decades, erosion in the quality and effectiveness of education systems especially in sub-Saharan Africa has been compounded by factors -such as exogenous pressures precipitated by unsystematic provision of foreign aid - fostering corrupt practices, inadequate teacher training and limited deployment of professional educators to under-served communities. Yet, quality education is needed to attain high levels of critical thinking, analytic interpretation, academic creativity, innovativeness, effectiveness, personal and inter-personal skills in problem solving. This book, which focuses on Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, critically reflects on primary, secondary and tertiary education in Southern Africa with a view to explore the opportunities, constraints and challenges that practitioners, learners and other educational stakeholders face in their daily lives. The book draws on the findings from the aforementioned countries, to advance the thesis that education in sub-Saharan Africa faces problems of epic proportions that require urgent attention. Hence, the primary objective of this book is to serve as a drive and medium for informed change, critical thinking, constructive analysis, synthesis and evaluation of different situations, settings and problems situated in the interface of theory and practice in the education fraternity.
The growing interest in transnational cooperation in education across borders has different implications for developed and developing countries. It is true that globalization affects all societies, but not at the same speed and magnitude. Supporting Multiculturalism in Open and Distance Learning Spaces is a critical scholarly resource that examines cultural issues and challenges in distance education arising from the convergence of theoretical, administrative, instructional, communicational, and technological dimensions of global education. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as cultural diversity, interaction in distance education, and culturally sensitive intuitional design, this book is geared towards school administrators, universities and colleges, policy makers, organizations, and researchers.
These proceedings of the ?fth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2010) exemplify the highly relevant and successful research being done in TEL. Because of this greatwork, this year’s conference focused on “Sustaining TEL: From Innovation to Learning and Practice.” The last decade hasseensigni?cantinvestmentintermsofe?ortandresources(i.e.,time,people, and money) in innovating education and training. The time has come to make the bold step from small-scale innovation research and development to larg- scale and sustainable implementation and evaluation. It is time to show the world (i.e., government, industry, and the general population) that our ?eld has matured to the stage that sustainable learning and learning practices – both in schools and in industry – can be achieved based upon our work. ThepresentdayTEL communitynowfaces newresearchquestionsrelatedto large-scale deployment of technology enhanced learning, supporting individual learning environments through mashups and social software, new approaches in TEL certi?cation, and so forth. Furthermore, new approaches are required for the design, implementation, and use of TEL to improve the understanding and communication of educational desires and the needs of all stakeholders, ranging from researchers, to learners, tutors, educational organizations, companies, the TEL industry, and policy makers. And the TEL community has taken up this challenge. As one can see in this volume, in its ?fth year the conference was once more able to assemble the most prominent and relevant research results in the TEL area. The conference generatedmorethan150submissionswhichdemonstratesaverylivelyinterestin the conference theme, thus signi?cantly contributing to the conference’s success.
