This book provides a self-contained treatment of two of the main problems of multiparameter spectral theory: the existence of eigenvalues and the expansion in series of eigenfunctions. The results are first obtained in abstract Hilbert spaces and then applied to integral operators and differential operators. Special attention is paid to various definiteness conditions which can be imposed on multiparameter eigenvalue problems. The reader is not assumed to be familiar with multiparameter spectral theory but should have some knowledge of functional analysis, in particular of Brower's degree of maps.
Multiparameter eigenvalue problems
One of the masters in the differential equations community, the late F.V. Atkinson contributed seminal research to multiparameter spectral theory and Sturm-Liouville theory. His ideas and techniques have long inspired researchers and continue to stimulate discussion. With the help of co-author Angelo B. Mingarelli, Multiparameter Eigenvalue Problem
The papers selected for publication here, many of them written by leaders in the field, bring readers up to date on recent achievements in modern operator theory and applications. The book’s subject matter is of practical use to a wide audience in mathematical and engineering sciences.
This book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Mathematical Results in Quantum Mechanics held in Blossin, Germany, May 17-21, 1993. Its purpose is to draw attention to the recent developments in quantum mechanics and related mathematical problems. The book is addressed to the wide audience of mathematicians and physicists interested in contemporary quantum physics and associated mathematical problems. The reader will find sections not only on traditional subjects such as Schrödinger and Dirac operators and generalized Schrödinger generators, but also on stochastic spectral analysis, many-body problems and statistical physics, chaos, and operator theory and its applications. Contributors: Schrödinger and Dirac operators: M.Sh. Birman, V. Grecchi, R. Hempel, M. Hoffmann-Ostenhof, Y. Saito, G. Stolz, M. Znojil • Generalized Schrödinger operators: J.-P. Antoine, J.F. Brasche, P. Duclos, R. Hempel, M. Klein, P. Stovicek • Stochastic spectral analysis: M. Demuth, V.A. Liskevich, E.M. Ouhabaz, P. Stollmann • Many-body problems and statistical physics: M. Fannes, R. This proceedings contains seven invited papers and 100 contributed papers. The topics covered range from studies of theoretical aspects of computational methods through to simulations of large-scale industrial processes, with an emphasis on the efficient use of computers to solve practical problems. Developers and users of computational techniques who wish to keep up with recent developments in the application of modern computational technology to problems in science and engineering will find much of interest in this volume.
