Multifamily Therapy Group for Young Adults with Anorexia Nervosa describes a new and innovative family-centered outpatient Multifamily Therapy Group (MFTG) approach called Reconnecting for Recovery (R4R) for young adults with anorexia nervosa that is based on a relational reframing of eating disorders. Objectives:Multifamily/Multidiagnostic structured psychoeducational sessions to understand the impact it has on the management of the mentally ill, both for patients and their caregivers.Background:The evolution of treatments used in Psychiatry has been keeping the individuals who have mental illness in the community, prioritizing outpatient treatment and avoiding prolonged hospital stays and institutionalization. Thus, responsibility regarding care provided to the patient is increasingly on the families, which are an important mediator between the patient and the healthcare system. Frequently however, family members feel unprepared and carry many doubts regarding the care of a mentally ill person. Psychoeducation has been assuming a progressively more important role in helping these families, introducing them to mental illness and teaching how to deal with most of the frequently encountered challenges. Several studies have proven the efficacy of different psychoeducational approaches, however, scarce information exists on multifamily/multidiagnostic groups and, at least in Portuguese territory, we have no knowledge of such management being applied.Materials and Methods:A cycle of 10 structured sessions held every 2 weeks with a multifamily/multidiagnostic group in a Psychiatric Day Hospital setting, conducted by a multidisciplinary team coordinated by a Psychiatrist.Results and Conclusions:The cycle of psychoeducational sessions has been completed for the first group. The attendance and feedback provided by both the families and the patients has been very positive and that has prompted us to advance in the next group with a prospective study using burden, functionality and clinical global impression scales, both at the beginning and the end of each cycle of sessions.
