Kashmiri women in the entire post-independence period progressed in some development-related fields, but, at the same time, faced serious degenerative problems in the last two decades. Keeping in view these women-related developments in Kashmir, the empirical studies of this book were carried out in last 8 years in the sociological framework to develop scientific understanding and to generate statistical data about the existing problems of women in the valley- study of muli-frious current problems of women, study of women's problems who are working in the unorganized sectors/fields of the handicrafts and micro-level studies of women working in some traditional occupations and modern professions.
With special reference to Srinagar City.
Marginalization is a multidimensional, multicausal, historical phenomenon. There are no general laws to understand and comprehend the complex nature of marginalization. The nature of marginalization varies in different settings. For example, the marginalization of women in Kashmir is not same as in rest of India, though, broadly, they share some features. The religious ideological system, patriarchy, political-economy of a country, and the overall social system have impact on the marginalization of a specific group or individual. Development is always broadly conceived in terms of mass participation. Marginalization deprives a large majority of people across the globe from participating in the development. It is a complex problem, and there are many factors that cause marginalization. This complex and serious problem need to be addressed at the policy level. Marginalization however, has remained to be a persistent phenomena in one form or the other for a vast section of the population despite fast social and economic transition in the society of Kashmir. Against this backdrop the present book aims to scrutinize the concept of marginalization as an interrelated social process, its changing dimensions and socio-political implications of persistent marginalization in Kashmir. This book is an attempt to highlight the marginalization in history of Kashmir. This book will help students and researchers to understand marginalization in history of Kashmir in a better way.
This book demonstrates that gender is a key component of conflict and peace discourse. The marginalization of women in conflict and peace is all pervasive. Kashmir is a mirror image of this global scenario. Kashmiri women aided the militant movement in significant ways though they did not take part in direct combat. They played key roles to sustain and nourish the movement – as protestors, protectors and motivators, and facilitators. Their experiences of participation in the conflict, however, remain subdued by the dominant masculinist discourse. Kashmiri women are excluded from the militancy discourse as contributors as well as from peacemaking discourse as stakeholders. The study interrogates theory and practice of women's participation in conflict and argues that changed gender-roles during conflict do not necessarily revolutionize socially ascribed norms. The book also examines the experiences of women in sustaining conflict to make a case for their due place in negotiating formal peace.
The problem in Jammu and Kashmir, having caused three major wars between India and Pakistan, has since late 1980's become a serious internal security problem. This is a politico-religious conflict reflecting elements of secession, self rule and greater economic control. Its effects are not only across the border but also global, with its potential to lead to war between two nuclear weapon states. The CSA study focuses on the consequences since causes remain historical while consequences are realities which societies and the government have to face. In long lasting internal conflicts, consequences tend to influence the conflict and even become the drivers of conflict. The generation which has been born and brought up facing the consequences also develops stakes in them. This volume focuses external and internal consequences of the conflict exploring the impact on governance, economy, interprovincial and interreligious relations, and specific segments of the society. It comprises of twelve research papers presented at the seminar held in Jammu in September 2010 in collaboration with the Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu.
This book contains thirty-three Best Paper Award-winning articles presented in the IIHSG International Conference 2021 on Gender Security and Global Politics organised by Interdisciplinary Institute of Human Security & Governance (previously Indian Institute of Human Security & Governance), Delhi in collaboration with the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London & Department of International Relations, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Around 450 gender security experts presented paper in this virtual event from 20 countries. ‘Security’ is a contested concept in global politics especially International Relations. Security often treated as a sole property of ‘masculinized’ politics of ‘realism’. But, ‘security’ and ‘gender’ both the terms has multifaceted usage. If ‘insecurity’ can be understood by ‘vulnerability’, then, you might agree that every ‘gender’ is vulnerable in pandemic time as it affected both physical and mental security of every individual irrespective of race, region or religion. This book, Gender Security & Global Politics tries to address various contemporary security issues in global arena through gendered lenses – like Gender Security: Theoretical Debate; Gender Security and Law; Gender Security and Governance; Gender Security & Labour Force; Gender Security & Political Economy; Gender Security and Sustainable Development; Non-Governmental Gender Security Measures; Global Agencies for Gender Security; Global Parameters for Gender Security; Gender Security in Domestic Sphere; Child Security Threats: Recent Trends and Gender Security and Pandemic: Recent Trends. I hope that this collection of essays can become a benchmark for the future as well as spur new research agendas and projects that will put the region into a much-needed conversation on the recent trends of gender security in world politics. The volume is essential reading for social scientists, bureaucrats and non-governmental political activists interested in gender security. It will also appeal to public policy analysts and scholars who have yet to adopt the contribution of critical security and development studies in the analysis of different dimensions of gender security.
Impact of arms conflict on women in Jammu and Kashmir, India; a study.
This book not only aims at highlighting existing inequalities between men and women, but also their efforts to overcome these challenges, especially so in women belonging to marginalized communities. It tries to explore systematic denial of rights to marginalized women—opportunities and resources that are normally and easily available to other members of a group, and which are fundamental to social, political integration and observance of human rights such as housing, employment, healthcare, civic engagement and democratic participation. The authors through their in-depth discussions and writings have tried to sketch Equal World as imagined by John Stuart Mill in the opening lines of The Subjugation of Women. This book is co-published with Aakar Books. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan)
