Describes the history and variations of the mullet hairstyle which is worn short in front and long in the back and is exemplified by Billy Ray Cyrus, Michael Bolton, and Barry White.
America’s favorite hairstyle is back in a big way! Ever since its meteoric rise to superstar status in the 1980s, the mullet has persisted for generations as a cultural touchstone in the hearts and minds of the public. Love it or hate it, there’s no ignoring this one-of-a-kind ’do and its profound sociological significance. Mullet Madness! examines the tumultuous history of the enigmatic American mullet, from its (possible) Neolithic origins to its (questionable) presence atop the mighty Sphinx, from the white powdered mullets of our nation’s founding fathers to the storied coifs of Billy Ray Cyrus, Hulk Hogan, and David Copperfield. Here is everything you need to go from total “neck blanket” amateur to certified mullet connoisseur. Bone up on the finer points of styling and upkeep. Learn to recognize the subtle variety of form so you’ll never confuse a Rattail Mullet with the classic Stingray look. Peruse galleries of iconic mullets from history, sports, movies, TV, music, and everyday Joes (and Janes!). Whether you call it an “Alabama Waterfall,” “Hockey Hair,” “The MacGuyver,” or “the Billy-Ray,” Mullet Madness! will have you reaching for the nearest pair of scissors, a mirror, and a six-pack of beer.

In 1987, three Jewish boys from New York forever changed the face of pop music. Their first album, Licensed to III and its smash hit single, (You've Gotta) Fight For Your Right (to Party) created a fresh new sound by blending hip-hop beats with a rock edge and punk attitude, in the process helping to bring hip-hop into the mainstream. Further albums have continued to push musical boundaries while confirming their position as one of the most influential musical groups of our time. And more than just chart-topping musicians, their unwavering commitment to Tibetan freedom and the plight of the Tibetan people has informed and inspired millions. Through a career that has had its share of ups and downs, the Beastie Boys have remained best friends and musical visionaries. This exciting new biography traces the group's transformation from radio-ready brats to elder statesmen of hip-hop.

What southerners do, where they go, and what they expect to accomplish in their spare time, their "leisure," reveals much about their cultural values, class and racial similarities and differences, and historical perspectives. This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture offers an authoritative and readable reference to the culture of sports and recreation in the American South, surveying the various activities in which southerners engage in their nonwork hours, as well as attitudes surrounding those activities. Seventy-four thematic essays explore activities from the familiar (porch sitting and fairs) to the essential (football and stock car racing) to the unusual (pool checkers and a sport called "fireballing"). In seventy-seven topical entries, contributors profile major sites associated with recreational activities (such as Dollywood, drive-ins, and the Appalachian Trail) and prominent sports figures (including Althea Gibson, Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, and Hank Aaron). Taken together, the entries provide an engaging look at the ways southerners relax, pass time, celebrate, let loose, and have fun.
The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera traces the development of the Florida-Alabama coast as a tourist destination from the late 1920s and early 1930s, when it was sparsely populated with "small fishing villages," through to the tragic and devastating BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010. Harvey H. Jackson III focuses on the stretch of coast from Mobile Bay and Gulf Shores, Alabama, east to Panama City, Florida--an area known as the "Redneck Riviera." Jackson explores the rise of this area as a vacation destination for the lower South's middle- and working-class families following World War II, the building boom of the 1950s and 1960s, and the emergence of the Spring Break "season." From the late sixties through 1979, severe hurricanes destroyed many small motels, cafes, bars, and early cottages that gave the small beach towns their essential character. A second building boom ensued in the 1980s dominated by high-rise condominiums and large resort hotels. Jackson traces the tensions surrounding the gentrification of the late 1980s and 1990s and the collapse of the housing market in 2008. While his major focus is on the social, cultural, and economic development, he also documents the environmental and financial impacts of natural disasters and the politics of beach access and dune and sea turtle protection. The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera is the culmination of sixteen years of research drawn from local newspapers, interviews, documentaries, community histories, and several scholarly studies that have addressed parts of this region's history. From his 1950s-built family vacation cottage in Seagrove Beach, Florida, and on frequent trips to the Alabama coast, Jackson witnessed the changes that have come to the area and has recorded them in a personal, in-depth look at the history and culture of the coast.
