This book explores the potential of U.S. movie theaters as an important national asset. Each of the 4,000 movie palaces constructed during Hollywood's Golden Age, as well as the countless smaller theaters modeled after the grander showcases, has a role to play in the life of today's cities. The first section of the book explores the social and economic history of the movie palace and the significance of the building phenomenon. Subjects such as the development of moving pictures, the marketing of them to the public, and the architectural style of movie palaces are examined. The leading theater architects are identified, and the decline of the large downtown theaters following World War II is discussed. The second part of the book consists of case studies, drawn from projects nationwide, which reflect the programming options for theater renaissance. Motivations for movie palace reuse are summarized into three situations: (1) a user needs a facility; (2) a facility needs a user; or (3) a city needs a redevelopment anchor. The third section of the book, which profiles the lessons of the second, includes planning guidelines for theater economic feasibility studies, organizational structures, program environments, and adaptive reuse and operating costs. Since the late 1800s, Boston has been a trendsetter in the development of the movie business. It was here that many of the earliest public showings of moving images took place and the name nickelodeon first appeared on a storefront theater. In 1896, B.F. Keith added film to his Washington Street theater, then throughout his national chain of vaudeville houses. In 1914, Boston's Modern became the country's first theater with an installed sound projection system. Several years later, the city had its first movie palace: Marcus Loew's Orpheum. A magnet for theater architects, Boston became a center for elegant movie houses, including the Metropolitan, Keith Memorial, and Paramount. Thanks to civic leaders and academic institutions, many of Boston's theaters have been preserved and restored and are alive and well today.
The spokelike grid of wide grand avenues radiating out from downtown Detroit allowed for a concentration of theaters initially along Monroe Street near Campus Martius and, after the second decade of the 20th century, clustered around Grand Circus Park, all easily accessible by a vast network of streetcars. In its heyday, Grand Circus Park boasted a dozen palatial movie palaces containing an astonishing total of 26,000 seats. Of these theaters, five remain today, fully restored and operational for live entertainment. Detroit, more so than any other North American city, illustrates how demographic and economic forces dramatically changed the landscape of film exhibition in an urban setting.
