There was a time when "American popular entertainment" referred only to radio and motion pictures. With the coming of talking pictures, Hollywood cashed in on the success of big-time network radio by bringing several of the public's favorite broadcast personalities and programs to the screen. The results, though occasionally successful, often proved conclusively that some things are better heard than seen. Concentrating primarily on radio's Golden Age (1926-1962), this lively history discusses the cinematic efforts of airwave stars Rudy Vallee, Amos 'n' Andy, Fred Allen, Joe Penner, Fibber McGee & Molly, Edgar Bergen, Lum & Abner, and many more. Also analyzed are the movie versions of such radio series as The Shadow, Dr. Christian and The Life of Riley. In addition, two recent films starring contemporary radio headliners Howard Stern and Garrison Keillor are given their due.
When Molly McGee and her family move to a new town, the optimistic 13-year-old is surprised to discover that their new home already has a resident: a grumpy paranormal named Scratch. Despite Scratch's efforts to scare Molly and her family away, the two opposites become best friends. On Molly's first day at her new school, she is determined to make a great first impression. Scratch, however, would love to see her positive attempts fail. However, when Molly gets in trouble with the classroom queen bee, Scratch can't stand to sit by and watch. He jumps into action to help his new friend. Molly's refreshing attitude offers a positive spin on tween life and dealing with conflict. A teen girl and a grumpy ghost may seem unlikely characters for a buddy comedy, but the two have a true, loyal friendship. Words are exciting to me. Like jigsaw pieces, when properly arranged, they become a beautiful story picture of communication that can plant love in a heart, tears in the eyes, and laughter on a sad face. Words are powerful. They direct the floundering, reform the sinner, and teach scholars. Words have the ability to concoct stories, document facts, comfort another, sign a peace treaty, compose a love letter, affirm a birth or a death. Words preserve visual and hidden meanings to be discovered by the reader. Because of my fascination with words I express my interpretations over two hundred ways in my poems that comprise this book. I want my words [poems] to live on for others to enjoy, love, hate or whatever.

It is 1950, and Brooklyn fourth grader Bobby Anderson hates writing letters more than anything in the whole wide world. Assigned by his “stoopid” teacher to pen “stoopid” letters to John, an imaginary recipient, Bobby shares an unforgettable glimpse into his young life as he details his adventures as a ten-year-old living in New York.As Bobby and his best friend, Earnest, move from fourth through eighth grades, he narrates days gone by as he plays stickball in the streets, finds treasures in garbage cans, feels the joys and pains of love, copes with the nuns at his Catholic school, and comes to the aid of beautiful ladies who live in his neighborhood. As witty, provoking, and tender experiences unfold, Bobby wishes he lived in the days when there were pirates, listens to Captain Midnight on the radio, and confesses a multitude of sins. After Bobby seeks and receives guidance about his future, he decides it is time to leave the letters and his imaginary friend behind.Peanut Butter Fridays presents a slice of life told through a series of letters that reveal the rollicking adventures as two Brooklyn boys solve at least some of life’s greatest mysteries.“A kid with the smarts of Tom Sawyer living in a Brooklyn tenement in the 1950s. Wonderfully written, fabulously funny, also a tool for teachers and psychologists.”—Richard Berman, PhD, social work
