En este volumen, que incluye las intervenciones de los profesores Jean-Claude Corbeil, Marcelo Diki-Kidiri y Luis Fernando Lara en el seminario de terminología de la I Escuela de Verano de Terminología organizada por el Instituto Universitario de Lingüística Aplicada de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra, se habla claramente de las falacias e inconsistencias de la uniformización, que se presenta como un estadio natural de comportamiento, ya que ni la visión del mundo, ni siquiera la del mundo especializado, no es uniforme, ni las situaciones sociopolíticas en las que se desarrolla el trabajo terminológico no son idénticas. Discurso y conocimiento se trata de un libro sobre las maneras que tienen los usuarios del lenguaje en gestionar el conocimiento en el discurso. Trata sobre el tipo de conocimiento general, sociocultural, que periodistas y lectores, entre muchos otros usuarios del lenguaje, han de tener para ser capaces de escribir o leer y comprender una noticia, para participar en una conversación, para dictar una clase o participar en reuniones profesionales, así como para muchos otros géneros de discursos. Hay muchos miles de libros sobre conocimiento, en variadas disciplinas, y muchos cientos de libros sobre discurso. Sin embargo, pese a las múltiples e interesantes relaciones entre las dos nociones, no existe ni siquiera una monografía que, sistemáticamente, se centre en el estudio de esas relaciones. La intención de este libro es, justamente, hacer eso. En esta monografía hemos mostrado, necesariamente a los más altos y, por lo tanto, más superficiales niveles, que el estudio del conocimiento se debe llevar a cabo de una manera profundamente integrada, como acabamos de mostrar en las últimas décadas para el estudio del discurso.

This Element discusses the consequences on the social bond of the conjoint action of the economic and social model inspired by the premises of neoliberalism and of the powerful pressures for the democratization of social relations in Chilean society. It is based upon empirical research developed in the past fifteen years. The main argument in this Element is that these processes have had as one of its most important effects the generation of a circuit of detachment, that is, a process that leads to different forms of disidentification and distancing from logics and principles that govern social relations and interaction. It is a dynamic circuit consisting of four components: excess, disenchantment, irritation, and, finally, detachment. The Element analyzes this circuit and each of its components as well as its consequences for the social bond. It also includes a brief reflection on the impact of this circuit over the political bond.
In Gabriel García Márquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, a character articulates the fascination goods, technology, and modernity held for many Latin Americans in the early twentieth century when he declares that “incredible things are happening in this world.” The modernity he marvels over is the new availability of cheap and useful goods. Steven Bunker’s study shows how goods and consumption embodied modernity in the time of Porfirio Díaz, how they provided proof to Mexicans that “incredible things are happening in this world.” In urban areas, and especially Mexico City, being a consumer increasingly defined what it meant to be Mexican. In an effort to reconstruct everyday life in Porfirian Mexico, Bunker surveys the institutions and discourses of consumption and explores how individuals and groups used the goods, practices, and spaces of urban consumer culture to construct meaning and identities in the rapidly evolving social and physical landscape of the capital city and beyond. Through case studies of tobacco marketing, department stores, advertising, shoplifting, and a famous jewelry robbery and homicide, he provides a colorful walking tour of daily life in Porfirian Mexico City. Emphasizing the widespread participation in this consumer culture, Bunker’s work overturns conventional wisdom that only the middle and upper classes participated in this culture.
