Excerpt from 1981 Minutes of the Burnt Swamp Baptist Association, North Carolina, One-Hundred Fourth Annual Session: Thursday Session, October 15, 1981, Mt. Airy Baptist Church; Friday Session, October 16, 1981, New Point Baptist Church This past week was a season of recognitions for men who have made special contributions to Lumbee history. Among these was tribute paid to a great spiritual leader, Rev. Percell Locklear, whose sudden death stole from us an honorable man and pillar of human inspiration. It's a good thing to honor those who excel in their fields of service and contribution. To honor their achievement and success, their leadership and inspiration to the rest of us is a noble act. Even the word of God declares its value in Romans Render therefore to all their dues: tribute, to whom tribute is to whom honour. Those who received our finest awards are now a part of an elite group. Unlike some men chosen to be awarded by others for services rendered, here was one chosen not only by men but also by the creator of men not just to contribute his energies to God's creation, but to commit his life toward its reconciliation, not just to serve but also sacrifice, not just succeed but also suffer. In our eagerness to credit the accomplishments of those who lead us or speak for us we too often overlook the compassion of those who guide -us and correct us. It is human to award those who honor us, while it is Godly to reward those who chasten us. Not all men of honor receive man's award, nor are all men who recieve human award men of honor. Not so with God. God honors those who honor him and keep his Word. Brother Percell Locklear could not boast of human award but he received a divine charge as inspired through 11 Tim. 4 to Preach The Word, to reprove, rebuke, exhort; to watch, work and be offered, to fight a good fight, to finish the course, to keep the faith. Now follows the reward: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of II Tim. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
