The Clinician’s Guide to ADHD combines the useful diagnostic and treatment approaches advocated in different guidelines with insights from other sources, including recent literature reviews and web resources. The aim is to provide clinicians with clear, concise, and reliable advice on how to approach this complex disorder. The guidelines referred to in compiling the book derive from authoritative sources in different regions of the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. After introductory discussion of epidemiology and etiology, guidance is provided on diagnosis in different age groups, differential diagnosis, assessment for potential comorbidities, and the issue of ADHD and driving. Advice is then given on the appropriate use of pharmacological and psychosocial treatment, the management of adverse events, and follow-up. A series of relevant scales, questionnaires, and websites are also included.
Spanish colonial missions and Mexican rancho and pueblo adobe structures are among California's earliest existing structures and the only above-ground remains of the state's original settlement by the Spanish and Mexican people. The Northridge earthquake of January 17, 1994, resulted in tragic losses to a number of these historic adobe buildings. The earthquake also provided a rare opportunity to assess the damage that can occur to such structures as the result of a large earthquake. The intent of this study—part of the GCI's long-term commitment to researching conservation measures appropriate for historic adobe structures—was to survey the damage to buildings and make an informed evaluation of their seismic performance. The ultimate goal was to use the lessons learned from the Northridge earthquake and the results of retrofit research to help owners, building officials, cultural resource managers, architects, and engineers to understand the risks earthquakes pose to historic adobe buildings and the necessity for taking considered action to limit those risks.
This book presents a brief design approach for cable-supported bridges based on experiences from past projects, both domestic and international, that were shared by experts in bridge engineering. The specifications outlined in the book are adopted in the design of several cable-stayed and extradosed bridges in India and abroad. These specifications are in conformance with the global best practices. In addition, reference literature has been consulted during the compilation of various sections of the book. In this endeavor, the author sought suggestions and collective guidance from some eminent specialists in cable-supported bridges from the USA, Europe and Asia in order to provide a glimpse of practices across the globe. In this book, the author has attempted to highlight the basic principles of cable supported bridges and the same should be used only as a guideline for design. It is believed that the reader would have acquired sufficient knowledge of analysis and design of complex bridges before going through this book. Lastly, brief case studies of two notable Indian bridges; the Second Vivekananda Extradosed (Nivedita) Bridge and Burdwan Cable Stayed Bridge are provided. While the former is an example of extradosed structure for Hooghly River crossing, the latter is a three-pylon (first time in India) cable stayed bridge over railway tracks. These examples will elucidate the purpose of this book and make it useful to young & practicing bridge engineers.
The initial Layer of protection analysis (LOPA) book published in 2001 set the rules and approaches for using LOPA as an intermediate method between purely qualitative hazards evaluation/analysis and more quantitative analysis methods. Basic LOPA provides an order-of-magnitude risk estimate of risk with fairly reproducible results. LOPA results are considered critical in determining safety integrity level for design of safety instrumented systems. This guideline clarifies key concepts and reinforces the limitations and the requirements of LOPA. The main scope of the guideline is to provide examples of CMs and ECs and to provide concrete guidance on the protocols that must be followed to use these concepts. The book presents a brief overview of Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and its variations, and summarizes terminology used for evaluating scenarios in the context of a typical incident sequence. It defines and illustrates the most common types of ECs and CMs and shows how they interrelate to risk criteria as well as their application to other methods.
