Building a data-driven organization (DDO) is an enterprise-wide initiative that may consume and lock up resources for the long term. Understandably, any organization considering such an initiative would insist on a roadmap and business case to be prepared and evaluated prior to approval. This book presents a step-by-step methodology in order to create a roadmap and business case, and provides a narration of the constraints and experiences of managers who have attempted the setting up of DDOs. The emphasis is on the big decisions – the key decisions that influence 90% of business outcomes – starting from decision first and reengineering the data to the decisions process-chain and data governance, so as to ensure the right data are available at the right time, every time. Investing in artificial intelligence and data-driven decision making are now being considered a survival necessity for organizations to stay competitive. While every enterprise aspires to become 100% data-driven and every Chief Information Officer (CIO) has a budget, Gartner estimates over 80% of all analytics projects fail to deliver intended value. A macroeconomic disequilibrium model is developed for the Federal Republic of Germany. Starting with a microeconomic model of firm's behaviour, the optimal dynamic adjustment of employment and investment is derived. The model of the firm is complemented by an explicite aggregation procedure which allows to derive macroeconomic relations. The model is estimated with macroeconomic data for the Federal Republic of Germany. An important feature is the consistent introduction of dynamic adjustment into a model of the firm. A new method is the particular approach of a delayed adjustment of employment and investment. The estimation results show significant underutilizations of labour and capital and indicate the importance of supply constraints for imports and exports. As the most prominent result, they reveal the importance of the slow adjustment of employment and investment for the macroeconomic situation in Germany and especially for the persistence of high unemployment in the eighties.

These changes affect not only trade flows, financial transfers and movements of people, but also the institutional framework. The ongoing process of European integration has to be viewed in this global context, and that is what the present volume tries to do for six important problem areas, viz. the field of Money, Currency and International Stabilization; Federal Tax Systems and the European Community; the area of International Factor Mobility; the International Debt Problem; the Econometrics of Internation~ Trade; and aspects of International Political Economy. In each chapter an effort is made to direct attention to the connections between international economic transactions of various kinds and the political and legal institutions which constitute the organizational framework. The 26 contributions are revised versions of papers originally presented at the Second Konstanz Symposium on International Economics and Institutions which was organized by the Long-term Research Programme (Sonderfor schungsbereich) "Internationalization of the Economy" on October 1 and 2, 1990.
