Petrogenesis of Metamorphic Rocks presents a large number of diagrams showing the stability relations among minerals and groups of minerals found in metamorphic rocks. The diagrams help to determine the pressure and temperature conditions under which a given set of metamorphic rocks may have formed. Other parameters that control metamorphic mineral assemblages are also discussed and pitfalls resulting from simplifications and generalizations are highlighted. The book discusses the most common metamorphic rock types, their nomenclature, structure and graphical representation of their mineral assemblages. Part I defines basic principles of metamorphism, introduces metamorphic processes, geologic thermometry and barometry and defines metamorphic grade. Part II presents in a systematic way mineralogical changes and assemblages found in the most common types of metamorphic rocks. The computation of diagrams is based on recent advances in quantitative petrology and geochemistry. An extensive bibliography, including the key contributions and classic papers in the field, make it an invaluable source book for graduate students and professional geologists.

Fluid-aided mass transfer and subsequent mineral re-equilibration are the two defining features of metasomatism and must be present in order for metamorphism to occur. Coupled with igneous and tectonic processes, metasomatism has played a major role in the formation of the Earth’s continental and oceanic crust and lithospheric mantle as well as in their evolution and subsequent stabilization. Metasomatic processes can include ore mineralization, metasomatically induced alteration of oceanic lithosphere, mass transport in and alteration of subducted oceanic crust and overlying mantle wedge, which has subsequent implications regarding mass transport, fluid flow, and volatile storage in the lithospheric mantle overall, as well as both regional and localized crustal metamorphism. Metasomatic alteration of accessory minerals such as zircon or monazite can allow for the dating of metasomatic events as well as give additional information regarding the chemistry of the fluids responsible. Lastly present day movement of fluids in both the lithospheric mantle and deep to mid crust can be observed utilizing geophysical resources such as electrical resistivity and seismic data. Such observations help to further clarify the picture of actual metasomatic processes as inferred from basic petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical data. The goal of this volume is to bring together a diverse group of geologists, each of whose specialities and long range experience regarding one or more aspects of metasomatism during geologic processes, should allow them to contribute to a series of review chapters, which outline the basis of our current understanding of how metasomatism influences and helps to control both the evolution and stability of the crust and lithospheric mantle.
The 2004 International Symposium on Computational and Information Sciences (CIS 2004) aimed at bringing researchers in the area of computational and - formation sciences together to exchange new ideas and to explore new ground. The goal of the conference was to push the application of modern computing technologies to science, engineering, and information technologies to a new level of sophistication and understanding. Theinitialideatoorganizesuchaconferencewithafocusoncomputationand applicationswasoriginatedbyDr.JunZhang,duringhisvisittoChinainAugust 2003, in consultation with a few friends, including Dr. Jing Liu at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Jun-Hai Yong at Tsinghua University, Dr. Geng Yang at Nanjing University of Posts and Communications, and a few others. After severaldiscussionswithDr.Ji-HuanHe,itwasdecidedthatDonghuaUniversity would host CIS 2004. CIS 2004 attempted to distinguish itself from other conferences in its - phasis on participation rather than publication. A submitted paper was only reviewed with the explicit understanding that, if accepted, at least one of the authors would attend and present the paper at the conference. It is our - lief that attending conferences is an important part of one’s academic career, through which academic networks can be built that may bene?t one’s academic life in the long run. We also made every e?ort to support graduate students in attending CIS 2004. In addition to set reduced registration fees for full-time graduate students, we awarded up to three prizes for to the Best Student Papers at CIS 2004. Students whose papers were selected for awards were given cash prizes, plus a waiver of registration fees.
