The prayers compiled in this unique book are gleaned from the rich tradition of Jesuit reflection on the human hunger for God. Hundreds of prayers are included, many written by the most illustrious Jesuits, including Ignatius Loyola, Francis Xavier, Peter Canisius, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and others.
Nourished by liturgy and lectio divina, this book offers a transforming theological vision based on prayer and spiritual insight. As a Benedictine monk the author contemplates the sacramental mysteries of Scripture, Baptism, the Eucharist, the icon, mystical prayer, and the great feasts of the liturgical year. Much of the book consists of reflections on the mysteries of Christ as they are celebrated in the liturgy. Grounded in theological research yet written in a style accessible to non-specialists and deeply committed to the post-Vatican II renewal of the Church, it aims to recover some of the ancient spiritual resources of monastic tradition so as to encourage a new vision of Christ as we meet him in his mysteries.
Discover how prayer can completely transform your life and put you in the presence of God's throne of grace. Hebrews 4:16 says you can always "approach God's throne of grace with confidence," knowing that you will "receive mercy and find grace" to help you in your time of need. That promise is so immense it's difficult for us to understand. In this six-session video-based Bible study (DVD/digital video sold separately), Pastor Jim Cymbala explores how God promises in his Word to always hear you, answer you, and extend his mercy when you come to him. As you pray with faith, he will provide his perfect peace and "meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory" (Philippians 4:19). You will find that approaching God's throne of grace will change your life and circumstances like nothing else--and that when you and other believers call on his name, powerful things happen in the world! Featuring teachings by Jim Cymbala and interviews with ordinary people who received extraordinary answers to their prayers, this study includes video teaching notes, Bible exploration questions, and personal study and reflection materials for in-between group sessions. Sessions include: The Throne of Grace Receiving Mercy Perfect Peace from God Praying with Faith God Brings the Answer The Church that Prays Together Designed for use with the Life-Changing Prayer Video Study (sold separately).
How, when, and where can one meet this Friend of every heart? My guess is that there are as many ways of meeting him as there are human beings in the world. I have heard of people who met him unexpectedly in near death experiences, during illnesses, or at crossroads in their lives. Some of these people saw and heard him, while for others the experience was less direct but no less meaningful. For example, they heard his voice or sensed his presence in the words or deeds of a friend or a stranger. I have also read of people meeting him because they earnestly desired it. Whether we are conscious or not of wanting to meet him, I believe his wish for the encounter is always present, but he never forces himself upon us. I have always felt complete respect from him for my freedom, both inner and outer" (from Friend of My Heart). To open this book is to open yourself to the possibility of an extraordinary meeting. For this is the story of such a meeting, and it is one that can happen to anyone who wants it. The book begins as each of us must begin--with a declaration of hope, heartfelt longing, expectation. Gathered from more than twenty-five journals over twenty years, the messages in this book invite us to listen in the spirit of simplicity, openness, and faith, and then to be attentive to what stirs within. First comes the question: how, when and where can one meet this Friend of the heart? The answer comes from the author's experiences and the messages she has received inwardly. Made deaf by illness at the age of six, Claire Blatchford speaks to us about how to listen and how to hear from our own inner and outer lives. These are primary messages, put into the context of the author's life, that enable us, in the context of our own lives, to enter into a relationship with this Being who is the Friend of every heart. Friend of My Heart leaves us with the profound sense that we can all stand truly as our own selves in the presence of love. Whether our notions of ‘god’ are personal projections or inherited traditions, author and theologian Brad Jersak proposes a radical reassessment, arguing for A More Christlike God: a More Beautiful Gospel. If Christ is “the image of the invisible God, the radiance of God’s glory and exact representation of God’s likeness,” what if we conceived of God as completely Christlike—the perfect Incarnation of self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love? What if God has always been and forever will be ‘cruciform’ (cross-shaped) in his character and actions? A More Christlike God suggests that such a God would be very good news indeed—a God who Jesus “unwrathed” from dead religion, a Love that is always toward us, and a Grace that pours into this suffering world through willing, human partners.
This reading plan introduces children ages 6-12 to Jesus Christ over the course of a year, working through the 4 Gospel narratives and what they have to teach about the Savior of the world.

There is an appetite for God. And it can be awakened. I invite you to turn from the dulling effects of food and the dangers of idolatry, and to say with some simple fast: "This much, O God, I want you." Our appetites dictate the direction of our lives - whether it be the cravings of our stomachs, the passionate desire for possessions or power, or the longings of our spirits for God. But for the Christian, the hunger for anything besides God can be an arch-enemy. While our hunger for God - and Him alone - is the only thing that will bring victory. Do you have that hunger for Him? As John Piper puts it: "If we don't feel strong desires for the manifestation of the glory of God, it is not because you have drunk deeply and are satisfied. It is because we have nibbled so long at the table of the world. Our soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great." If we are full of what the world offers, then perhaps a fast might express, or even increase, our soul's appetite for God. Between the dangers of self-denial and self-indulgence is this path of pleasant pain called fasting. It is the path John Piper invites you to travel in this book. For when God is the supreme hunger of your heart, He will be supreme in everything. And when you are most satisfied in Him, He will be most glorified in you.
The Times Are Urgent God Is on the Move Now Is the Moment to ... ask God to ignite his fire in your soul! Pastor Jim Cymbala believes that Jesus wants to renew his people-to call us back from spiritual dead ends, apathy, and lukewarm religion. Cymbala knows the difference firsthand. Thirty-five years ago his own church, the Brooklyn Tabernacle, was a struggling congregation of twenty. Then they began to pray ... God began to move ... street-hardened lives by the hundreds were changed by the love of Christ ... and today they are more than ten thousand strong. The story of what happened to this broken-down church in one of America's toughest neighborhoods points the way to new spiritual vitality in the church and in your own life. Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire shows what the Holy Spirit can do when believers get serious about prayer and the gospel. As this compelling book reveals, God moves in life-changing ways when we set aside our own agendas, take him at his word, and listen for his voice.
