Eric J. Goldberg traces the long history of early medieval hunting from the late Roman Empire to the death of the last Carolingian king, Louis V, in a hunting accident in 987. He focuses chiefly on elite men and the changing role that hunting played in articulating kingship, status, and manhood in the post-Roman world. While hunting was central to elite lifestyles throughout these centuries, the Carolingians significantly altered this aristocratic activity in the later eighth and ninth centuries by making it a key symbol of Frankish kingship and political identity. This new connection emerged under Charlemagne, reached its high point under his son and heir Louis the Pious, and continued under Louis's immediate successors. Indeed, the emphasis on hunting as a badge of royal power and Frankishness would prove to be among the Carolingians' most significant and lasting legacies. Goldberg draws on written sources such as chronicles, law codes, charters, hagiography, and poetry as well as artistic and archaeological evidence to explore the changing nature of early medieval hunting and its connections to politics and society. Featuring more than sixty illustrations of hunting imagery found in mosaics, stone sculpture, metalwork, and illuminated manuscripts, In the Manner of the Franks portrays a vibrant and dynamic culture that encompassed red deer and wild boar hunting, falconry, ritualized behavior, female spectatorship, and complex forms of specialized knowledge that united kings and nobles in a shared political culture, thus locating the origins of courtly hunting in the early Middle Ages.

The medieval origins of current medical practice continue to be a subject of great interest. Tony Hunt has undertaken pioneer work in this field, and now presents, for the first time, the complete set of illustrations which accompany a 13th-century Anglo-Norman translation of Roger of Parma's Surgery (c. 1180), which was the first original treatise on surgery to be written in the medieval West. His commentary on the illustrations relates the drawings precisely to the sections of text they illustrate and thus provides more accurate identification of the different medical treatments depicted by the artist than has previously been the case. These distinctive drawings, almost without parallel in 13th-century England, show a consummate medical illustrator at work, uniquely combining technical, aesthetic and psychological interests. While the illustrations, which were added after the manuscript had been executed, performed a useful function as guide-marks to the contents of the surgical treatise, they are above all an intriguing and delightful monument to an anonymous artist of rare technical accomplishment. It is not only students of medicine who will find much of interest in these early pictorial representations of the medieval pharmacy and the range of therapeutic treatments covered by the surgeon in an age which had not yet produced any clear demarcation between surgery and general medicine.
Medieval cetacean (whales, dolphins, andporpoises) exploitation has frequently been connected to various medievalsocieties, including the Basques, Norse, Normans, and Flemish. Primarily forthe ninth to the twelfth centuries AD, it has been argued that the symbolicsignificance of cetaceans surpassed their utilitarian value and that theirconsumption was restricted to the social elite. The extent to which activewhaling was practised remains unclear. The identification of zooarchaeologicalcetacean fragments to the species level is hard and as a result they arefrequently merely identified as 'whale', resulting in a poor understanding ofhuman-cetacean interaction in the past. Zooarchaeological research as part of this study has revealed thatmedieval cetacean exploitation was widespread and especially the harbourporpoise (Phocoena phocoena), common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiopstruncatus), and the North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis)were frequently targeted. The exploitation additionally seems to have oftenbeen restricted to the social elite.

Businessmen's responses to the devastating plagues, famines, and warfare that beset Europe in the late Middle Ages are equally well covered. Medieval businessmen's remarkable success in coping with this hostile new environment was 'a harvest of adversity' that prepared the way for the economic expansion of the sixteenth century. Two main themes run through this book. First, the force and direction of business development in this period stemmed primarily from the demands of the elite. Second, the lasting legacy of medieval businessmen was less their skillful adaptations of imported inventions than their brilliant innovations in business organization.
