Excerpt from Measuring Tools: Calipers, Dividers, Surface Gages, Micrometer Measuring Instruments In 1774 the Royal Society offered a reward of a hundred guineas for a method that would obtain an invariable standard, and Halton proposed a pendulum with a moving weight upon it, so that by count ing the beats when the weight was in one position and again when in another, and then measuring the distance between the two positions, a distance could be defined that could at any time be duplicated. The Society paid 30 guineas for the suggestion, and later the work was taken up by J. Whitehurst with the result that the distance between the positions of the weight when vibrating 42 and 84 times a minute was inches. The method was not further developed. Excerpt from Electric and Magnetic Measurements and Measuring Instruments The following volume has been written for the use of those who have to do with electrical and magnetic measurements in one form or another, and as these must be made in practically all branches of the profession, from the simple testing out of lines and resistances to the most elaborate determination of designs, it is hoped that its Sphere of usefulness will be quite large. The subjects have, throughout, been approached with a View toward their use by users, not manufacturers, of measuring apparatus, that is to say the book is in no sense intended as a treatise on the design and construction of instruments, the circle interested being decidedly limited. Descriptions are, however, given of apparatus as well as of methods of test, because knowl edge of the manner in which a principle is utilized in concrete instruments often suggests, to one having a determination to make but is at the same time without the particular form of appliance ordinarily employed for that purpose, means of adap ing thereto some other device which is at hand. Further, in illustrating examples of instruments for different kinds of work, there has been in mind the idea that these will enable engineers to decide, with the aid of their general engineering knowledge, which are the best suited to their particular requirements. Excerpt from Mathematical Drawing and Measuring Instruments Our scientific literature has become SO diffuse and universal, that we expect to find an outline of all the little mysteries Of any particular art, somewhere in print. If such is not to be found, the restless inquiry that demand proclaims, will generally tempt some indi vidual to become the teacher, however far he may fall Short Of perfect mastery? J?) Excerpt from Industrial Electrical Measuring Instruments IN the interval which has elapsed since the publication of the First Edition, there has been considerable development 111 nearly all directions. Of epoch making innovations there has been none, but progress has been continuous. As a result, it has been necessary to rewrite the whole, and the expansion of all sections has been so great that in order to keep Within reasonable limits some have had to be abandoned. For this reason, the subject of Fault Localisa tion, as distinguished from Fault Detection, has been omitted, as have also Relays and Over Pressure Devices. Pyrometers, on the other hand, have again been dealt with at some length. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Gaging Tools and Methods: Measuring Instruments Used by Machinists and Toolmakers The standard bar thus marked was taken to Washington and com pared with the government standard Bronze No. 11 and also with Low Moor iron No. 57. In comparing these standards, a method was employed very similar to that used in marking. The bar, properly supported, Was placed upon a box that rested upon rolls and onthis same box was placed the government standard with which the Brown Sharpe standard was to be compared. Both the government standard and the bar to be tested were placed in position under the microscope and by the micrometer screw of the microscope the variation between the two was measured. Three comparisons or tests were made on each end before determining the reading of the microscope, and after these comparisons the value of the B. S. Standard No. 2 was found to be inches for the yard, and meter for the meter. After completing this work, a second standard known as No. 3 was prepared, and comparison with the government standard showed the error to be inch for the yard, and 0000005 meter for the meter. After establishing a yard in this manner, the next problem was that of obtaining an inch; this was done by subdividing the yard into two equal parts, and then further subdividing these two divisions into three, and the three into six, thus giving thirty-six subdivisions or inches. Excerpt from Optical Measuring Instruments: Their Construction, Theory, and Use The present book makes no pretence of instructing the Optical scientific instrument maker in his own work, but since it presents some Of the views of the user of instruments, and since it covers a range of instruments wider than the production of most factories, it may prove of some interest to commercial firms. NO user of a tool can study it too thoroughly, and he will learn a lesson of no little value if he realizes that, in the use of an Optical instrument, the eye and, in fact, the whole mind and body are equally concerned in obtaining the required results. The author will feel amply repaid, however, if it should prove that the book appeals to teachers of science. Are there not many parts of typical physics courses which could with advantage be replaced by more modern material which, while equally educational, is more likely to find direct application in practice? The study of instruments yields such material in abundance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Electrical Engineering Measuring Instruments for Commercial and Laboratory Since the electrical engineering industry began to show signs of rapid development, numerous types and forms of measuring instruments have been devised by different inventors. Many of these are now obsolete, having given place to instruments with greater refinements and on better principles. Though several of these obsolete types are extremely interesting. And, indeed, instructive, they have not been described in the present work. If information regarding them is required, it will be found in the abridged patent specifications since about 1880. Only those instruments in actual and extensive use at the present day are here considered. And these form so large a body that it seems better not to try to deal with the historical portion of the subject. Excerpt from Measurements, Equipment and Technique The new drying lamps used for many industrial heating jobs require instruments for measuring the concentration of radiant energy and the temperature of the work as it is exposed to that radiation. For simple portable instruments that can be taken into the field, various forms of the light meter have been found very acceptable. Such instruments have proved sturdy, compact, and convenient to use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
