Mathematics: intellectual endeavor, production factor, key technology, key to key technologies? Mathematics is all of these! The last three of its facets have been the focus of the research and development in the Berlin-based DFG Research Center MATHEON in the last twelve years. Through these activities MATHEON has become an international trademark for carrying out creative, application-driven research in mathematics and for cooperating with industrial partners in the solution of complex problems in key technologies. Modern key technologies have become highly sophisticated, integrating aspects of engineering, computer, business and other sciences. Flexible mathematical models, as well as fast and accurate methods for numerical simulation and optimization open new possibilities to handle the indicated complexities, to react quickly, and to explore new options. Researchers in mathematical fields such as Optimization, Discrete Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Scientific Computing, Applied Analysis and Stochastic Analysis have to work hand in hand with scientists and engineers to fully exploit this potential and to strengthen the transversal role of mathematics in the solution of the challenging problems in key technologies. This book presents in seven chapters the highlights of the research work carried out in the MATHEON application areas: Life Sciences, Networks, Production, Electronic and Photonic Devices, Finance, Visualization, and Education. The chapters summarize many of the contributions, put them in the context of current mathematical research activities and outline their impact in various key technologies. To make some of the results more easily accessible to the general public, a large number of "showcases" are presented that illustrate a few success stories.
This book is about the results of a number of projects funded by the BMBF in the initiative "Mathematics for Innovations in Industry and Services". It shows that a broad spectrum of analytical and numerical mathematical methods and programming techniques are used to solve a lot of different specific industrial or services problems. The main focus is on the fact that the mathematics used is not usually standard mathematics or black box mathematics but is specifically developed for specific industrial or services problems. Mathematics is more than a tool box or an ancilarry science for other scientific disciplines or users. Through this book the reader will gain insight into the details of mathematical modeling and numerical simulation for a lot of industrial applications.

This volume is a compilation of the research program of the 10th International Conference on the Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Operations Research (OR) Techniques in Constraint Programming, CPAIOR 2013, held at Yorktown Heights, NY, USA, in May 2013. This volume contains 20 full papers and 11 short papers that were carefully reviewed and selected from 71 submissions. This book contains selected papers from the symposium "Operations Research 2010" which was held from September 1-3, 2010 at the "Universität der Bundeswehr München", Germany. The international conference, which also serves as the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), attracted more than 600 participants from more than thirty countries. The general theme "Mastering Complexity" focusses on a natural component of the globalization process. Financial markets, traffic systems, network topologies and, last but not least, energy resource management, all contain complex behaviour and economic interdependencies which necessitate a scientific solution. Operations Research is one of the key instruments to model, simulate and analyze such systems. In the process of developing optimal solutions, suitable heuristics and efficient procedures are some of the challenges which are discussed in this volume.

In the past decades, model reduction has become an ubiquitous tool in analysis and simulation of dynamical systems, control design, circuit simulation, structural dynamics, CFD, and many other disciplines dealing with complex physical models. The aim of this book is to survey some of the most successful model reduction methods in tutorial style articles and to present benchmark problems from several application areas for testing and comparing existing and new algorithms. As the discussed methods have often been developed in parallel in disconnected application areas, the intention of the mini-workshop in Oberwolfach and its proceedings is to make these ideas available to researchers and practitioners from all these different disciplines.
