Writing about himself, Apostle Paul said, "But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified" (1 Cor. 9:27). He said, "I discipline my body." This is noteworthy! Somebody disciplining himself! And Jesus Christ says that the flesh is weak, while the spirit is willing. Have you ever asked yourself why you do some things which you do not want to do? It is because even though your spirit is willing and wants to please God, yet the flesh and body is weak. And we are speaking about mastering and defeating weak points. If you master a weak point and defeat it, with time it is supposed to cease from being a weak point in your life.
God has different responsibilities and expectations from His children and Servants. But we can pay the price He requires from us in order to perform and fulfil those assignments and expectations well? The prices will vary for many people; whatever He wants us to do or sacrifice, in order to carry out His Work and Purposes, let us do them no matter the cost. Jesus Christ has paid the ultimate Price and Sacrifice for us. But what God expects from us is the price of obedience to whatever He wants us to do in our different areas of callings, no matter how hard or difficult they may look like, knowing that God cannot tell us to do what we cannot do. It is like Mary speaking to the servants, and saying, "Whatever He says to you, do it" (Jn 2:5). That statement is a very strong statement. Our success in life and ministry is in "Whatever He tells you to do, do it." Whatever God tells you to do is the price that you have to pay.
The word 'backslide' literally means to 'turn back' or 'turn away' from God, our first love, or the Word of God to satan, the world, the flesh, or evil. Backsliding is a sliding back. Though backsliding is not sudden in onset, it may escalate rapidly. Backsliding is different from falling away or apostasy, which is the extreme end of backsliding. Apostasy or falling away is the act or state of rejecting the Christian Faith and belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. But backsliding has to do with going into sin, getting lukewarm, leaving your first love, living in compromise and worldliness, and such things. It is a sliding back − a going back − from our former good state.
Speaking to King Saul, Prophet Samuel said, "You have done foolishly. You have not kept the Commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His Own Heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you" (1 Sam. 13:13-14). You are going to read and study the life and ministry of David, the man after God's Own Heart in this book.
