Excerpt from Marlborough College Register: From 1843 to 1904 Inclusive, With Alphabetical Index A Charter dated August established the College as a Corporation by the title of 'the Governors of Marlborough College.' The Archbishop of Canterbury was to be the Visitor; the management was entrusted to a Council consisting of the Bishop of the Diocese (salisbury) as President, twelve clergymen, and thirteen laymen appointed by the Life Governors. A Life Governor was one who on payment of a certain sum acquired the right to nominate during his life-time one pupil at the College. The number of pupils who were sons of laymen was limited to one-third of the whole number, the yearly charges for these being higher than for sons of clergy men. This proportion and these numbers were subsequently altered at different times, until in 1871 all limitations with regard to the sons of lay men, and all differences of charges, were abolished. With a view, however, to maintaining the original object of the College, seventy-four 'foundation Scholarships' were established, Open only to the sons of clergymen. The Charter of 1845 was further extended in 1853. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
