Abstract: Major issues and major goals of a national food policy are outlined and described. Sixteen critical food and agricultural issues are tied into four food system goals: 1) assuring safe, nutritious food for all segments of the population; 2) assuring that the economic strength of the food system is maintained; 3) fulfilling the Nation's commitment to help meet world food demand through humanitarian measures and commercial export; and 4) developing and coordinating national and international food policies. The issues and goals are used by the U.S. General Accounting Office to organize its own activities. Appended are lists of Congressional committees, federal agencies, federal commissions, federal offices, federal departments, and organizations related to food.
