This book supplies both empirical evidence and scholarly analysis that exemplify successful innovation in South America in the field of sustainability education. Examining the issues from a three-fold perspective, of national policy, regional planning and grassroots projects in schools and communities, the volume offers a comprehensive overview of the contemporary situation in Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and Venezuela. It provides case studies as detailed illustrations of the recipe for success as well as to inform researchers and practitioners of the kinds of obstacles and challenges they might face in seeking to manifest sustainability. A good deal of the research and scholarly studies in the field of education for sustainability and sustainable development is underpinned by ‘Western’ norms and culture. This book draws on that literature, yet also teases out features in the case studies that are particular to the region. South America itself encompasses a rich variety of natural and cultural environments—within individual nations as much as continent-wide. This diversity is a recurring theme in the book. The volume’s three sections provide first a general survey, enriched with material from studies conducted in a number of different polities. The second section covers developments in Brazil, South America’s largest nation and one that exhibits many of the features of education for sustainability found across the continent. Part three sets out and explores future trends. As with other books in the Schooling for Sustainable Development series, this volume will add impetus to scholarly exchange as well as contributing insights on education policy and curriculum changes across South American communities that exist in an increasingly globalized world.
This book brings together a broad range of approaches and methodologies relevant to international comparative vocational education and training (VET). Revealing how youth in transition is affected by economic crises, it provides essential insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the various systems and prospects of VET in contexts ranging from North America to Europe, (e.g. Spain, Germany or the UK) to Asia (such as China, Thailand and India). Though each country examined in this volume is affected by the economic crisis in a different way, the effects are especially apparent for the young generation. In many countries the youth unemployment rate is still very high and the job perspectives for young people are often limited at best. The contributions in this volume demonstrate that VET alone cannot solve these problems, but can be used to support a smooth transition from school to work. If the quality of VET is high and the status and job expectations are good, VET can help to fill the skills gap, especially at the intermediate skill level. Furthermore, VET can also offer a realistic alternative to the university track for young people in many countries.
The book is based on the exchange of professional experiences which featured in an IUCN CEC workshop in August 2002. Practitioners from around the world shared their models of good practice and explored the challenges involved in engaging people in sustainability. The difficulties facing practitioners vary between country and context but some challenges are universal: A lack of clarity in communicating what is meant by sustainable development; An ambition to educate everyone to bring about a global citizenship; Social, organisational or institutional factors constrain change to sustainable development, yet there is an emphasis on formal education, and community educators do not receive the same support; A lack of balance in addressing the integration of environmental, social and economic dimensions leading to an interpretation that ESD is mainly about environment and conservation issues; New learning (rather than teaching) approaches are called for to promote more debate in society. Yet, few are trained or experienced in these new approaches. Practitioners need support to explore new ways of promoting learning. [Foreword, ed].
The joint symposium of ICA commissions is always one of the most important event for cartographers. This joint seminar in Orleans was connected to 25th International Cartographic Conference, Paris. Works were presented by members of the commissions on: Cartography and Children, Cartographic Education and Training, Maps and the Internet, Planetary Cartography, Early Warning and Disaster Management.
Self-regulated learning (SRL) subsumes key aspects of the learning process, such as cognitive strategies, metacognition and motivation, in one coherent construct. Central to this construct are the autonomy and responsibility of students to take charge of their own learning. Skills for self-regulation can be encouraged both directly and indirectly through a range of learning activities. In this book we look specifically at the ways in which technology enhanced learning environments (TELEs) have been used to support self-regulation. The book provides an overview of recent studies on SRL in TELEs in Europe – a perspective which is new and has not been articulated hitherto. It addresses conceptual and methodological questions as well as practices in technology enhanced learning. While the focus is on European studies, we are aware that much of the groundwork in the field of SRL has emanated from the United States. The book is divided into three parts: (A) Foundations of SRL in TELEs, (B) Empirical studies on SRL in TELEs and (C) SRL in TELEs: perspectives on future developments. The book presents a rich resource of information for researchers and educators at all levels who are interested in supporting the acquisition of SRL through TELEs.

With growing calls for affordable and quality education worldwide, we are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of post-secondary education and pedagogical practices. Higher education is undergoing innovative transformations to respond to our urgent needs. The change is hastened by the global pandemic that is currently underway. The 9th International Conference on Interactive, Collaborative, and Blended Learning: Visions and Concepts for Education 4.0 was conducted in an online format at McMaster University, Canada, from 14th to 15th October 2020, to deliberate and share the innovations and strategies. This conference’s main objectives were to discuss guidelines and new concepts for engineering education in higher education institutions, including emerging technologies in learning; to debate new conference format in worldwide pandemic and post-pandemic conditions; and to discuss new technology-based tools and resources that drive the education in non-traditional ways such as Education 4.0. Since its beginning in 2007, this conference is devoted to new learning approaches with a focus on applications and experiences in the fields of interactive, collaborative, and blended learning and related new technologies. Currently, the ICBL conferences are forums to exchange recent trends, research findings, and disseminate practical experiences in collaborative and blended learning, and engineering pedagogy. The conference bridges the gap between ‘pure’ scientific research and the everyday work of educators. Interested readership includes policymakers, academics, educators, researchers in pedagogy and learning theory, school teachers, industry-centric educators, continuing education practitioners, etc.
