Excerpt from A Manual of Organic Materia Medica: Being a Guide to Materia Medica of the Vegetable and Animal Kingdoms When, ih 1867, the author was called to the Chair of Materia Medica in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, -he seriously felt the need of a suitable text-book which could be used in connection with his lectures, and he made preparations for the pub lication of such a work at an early date, but the accomplishment of his purpose has been delayed from time to time. To elaborate a system of classi fication which should be readily comprehended and easily applied by those for whom it was intended was by no means an easy task, and the author found occasion, almost every year, either to remodel that previously selected, or to make what in his opinion seemed to be desirable improvements. The publica tion of the National Dispensatory in a measure sup plied the want, at least as far as a work of reference is concerned, but, owing to its lexical arrangement, it is not well adapted for systematic instruction.
