This second revised and enlarged edition addresses current techniques concerned with the implementation of the AO/ASIF System in small animal orthopaedic surgery. Surgeons who have used the system over the years have now considerable knowledge and experience which they have made available in this text. The same individuals have designed and modified special implants which are now available to the Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgeon. Sections have been added or modified concerned with severe trauma, implant removal and a system for recording fracture type and treatment. The book will serve to inform the experienced surgeon of the current situation, and at the same time it is still a basic text for the newcomer to veterinary small animal orthopaedics in general and the AO/ASIF system in particular.

Cats are not referred to specialists as frequently as dogs, meaning the general practitioner must routinely treat cats that have been involved in road traffic accidents and other musculoskeletal trauma. This book is the first of its kind to provide a practical and user-friendly guide to feline orthopaedics. With a new author team, led by RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) and Veterinary Neurology Harry Scott, the second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. New chapters cover Physiotherapy and Oncology of the Feline Skeletal System. The book includes highly structured fully referenced text that provides a concise, straightforward guide to the recognition and management of specific diseases and conditions. In this new edition, the neurological causes of lameness have been given more in-depth discussion, with an emphasis on early recognition of clinical signs and diagnosis. The disorder sections are now divided into those likely to be associated with trauma (fractures and luxation) and those which are congenital or developmental. The text is supported by high quality radiographs, colour photographs and colour line drawings to illustrate principles, techniques and procedures. Combining their experience in practice and education, the authors have produced a book that appeals to general practice veterinarians, specialist feline practitioners and to students.
A step-by-step manual with DVD! This new AO text is a step-by-step manual for treating fractures in the mandible, maxilla, spine, scapula, pelvis, humerus, radius, ulna, femur, patella, tibia and fibula, carpus, tarsus, metacarpal and metatarsal bones, and digits. Engaging current concepts of AO teaching with a particular focus on the biology of fracture healing, this book is designed to guide the surgeon through all the stages of fracture management, from preoperative evaluation and fracture planning, to anesthesia and pain management protocols, to fraction reduction techniques and surgical procedures. The authors also discuss considerations for rehabilitation. This authoritative resource comes with a DVD-ROM containing the entire book in digital form for easy search and convenient text-to-video launch of 64 AO teaching videos and 12 animations that demonstrate key surgical techniques. This text is a must for all practicing veterinary orthopedic surgeons.
This textbook emphasizes the fundamentals of bone fracture and its fixation, including advanced techniques of osteosynthesis in both small and large animals. Various fracture fixation techniques and devices have been described in simple language with the help of sketches and photographs. The chapter on the basic considerations in fracture fixation narrates bone structure and types, bone development and growth regulation, types of fracture and fracture healing, first aid and emergency treatment, selection of fracture fixation technique, anesthetic management, and fracture fixation implants and instruments. The book highlights principles of different external, internal, and external skeletal fixation techniques. It also presents various basic and advanced techniques used to manage specific fractures in different bones, separately for small and large animal patients. It also includes specific topics like fracture fixation in young, osteoporotic, and avian bones, open fracture management, bone grafts and scaffolds, and fracture fixation complications. Towards the end, the book elucidates miscellaneous but essential topics in veterinary orthopedics such as metabolic bone diseases, antebrachial bone deformities, joint luxations, arthritis, common tendon, and ligament injuries, bone tumors, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation of patients. This textbook is essential reading for veterinary students, practitioners, and researchers working in veterinary orthopedic surgery.
Biomaterials are often designed to act as scaffolds, i.e., 3D porous templates that support and stimulate the growth of healthy tissue and then safely dissolve once they have performed their functions. This book provides a picture of the current state of the art in the field of scaffolds for tissue engineering, highlighting the potential associated to the latest scientific and technological advancements. The former part of the book focuses on the repair of "hard" tissues (primarily bone) by means of bioceramic/glass scaffolds, and the latter deals with the applications of polymeric scaffolds for regenerating "soft" tissues and structures including the peripheral nerve, heart, gastric mucosa and pancreas. Special emphasis is given to the challenges associated to scaffold manufacturing, biomimetic properties and cell-scaffold interactions.

With detailed coverage of surgical procedures, Veterinary Surgery: Small Animal is an authoritative, two-volume reference on the art and science of small animal surgery. Expert contributors discuss surgical principles and procedures for topics ranging from surgical biology and perioperative care, to neurosurgery orthopedic surgery, and soft tissue surgery, always supported by evidence-based research and complete surgical instructions. More procedures are covered with greater detail than in comparable books, and a greater emphasis on pathophysiology shows how it relates to diagnosis, treatment, and overall case management. Experienced Coeditors Karen Tobias and Spencer Johnston provide the definitive reference for veterinary surgery, invaluable preparation for the ACVS and ECVS board examinations. Blend of clinical and basic science information provides the best possible understanding of clinical issues surrounding operative situations. Specific procedures are covered in great detail and are brought to life with full-color drawings and photographs. Highly recognized contributors provide authoritative coverage that is useful for surgical specialists as well as practicing veterinarians who perform surgery or refer cases for surgery. Detailed coverage of small animal surgery provides excellent preparation for the written examination of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Comprehensive coverage includes surgical biology, surgical methods and perioperative care, neurosurgery, and orthopedics in Volume I; soft tissue surgery is covered in Volume II. Coverage of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology in chapters on specific organs includes information critical to operative procedures and patient management. In-depth chapters on anesthesia and pain provide indispensable resources for practicing surgeons. Treatment of cancers in small animals is covered in chapters on surgical oncology, tumors of the spine, and musculoskeletal neoplasia. Extensive references to published studies show the factual basis for the material. The companion website includes all of the images in the book for convenient access, plus references linked to original abstracts on PubMed.
A chronicle written only by someone for whom the present important. Goethe, Maximen und Reflexionen The second volume of our company's history differs from the first in several ways. With a great appreciation of history, Heinz Sarkowski has impressively reconstructed the company cor- spondence, which is fortunately almost completely preserved, and made it speak. * There is an inexhaustible amount of c- respondence pertaining to the period I have taken it upon myself to cover, and working through it properly not only would have required many years, but also would have detracted from the immediacy of the account. Thus, I decided to proceed from personal experience, to describe what has happened and to provide details gleaned from the correspondence. I have - counted here by no means only my own, but rather the personal experiences of the many company members and employees who are mentioned below. With the founding of the New York firm, developments branch out, becoming parallel but separate, and the change from one scene to another repeatedly interrupts the continuing course of events and the chronological flow of the report. In this connection, the occasional repetition of certain facts was - avoidable. In some places, however, it seemed more appropriate not to interrupt particular lines of development, but to describe them in continuity without regard to specific periods of time.
