What does it mean to be a man? Sacrifice.
With this book every man will be able to overcome whatever perils and difficulties he might encounter in the course of an adventurous life.
As a black man in America, Ricky Spann sees the need for African American males to unite and provide leadership for the inner-city youth in America. Actions speak louder than words, and complaining about the problems in inner cities is no longer an option. In basketball and in life, crying foul exposes our weaknesses and does not get us anywhere. It's time to determine solutions without violence and stop blaming others for the current state of affairs. Self-governance with political and economic actualization is needed to help African Americans serve the community and to facilitate more influence on the global scene. While assistance can be obtained from others, black men must do most of the heavy lifting in their own communities to defeat the enemies of any society: crime, poverty, and illiteracy. Spann proposes a formal, organized body of African American leaders, named the Black Strategic Alliance (BSA), to promote unity and prosperity among African Americans and help them increase their contributions to society by creating jobs, training workers, preparing leaders, and securing more government positions at local, state, federal, and global levels.
I’ve watched men change from confident, decisive, and action-oriented lions to second-guessing, scared-of-their-shadows, don’t-rock-the-boat mice. They don’t feel confident in relationships, work environments—or anywhere. Men are either looking for something or running from something; maybe it’s a bit of both. Well, it’s time to stop running. It’s time to MAN UP to face the real issues. Being a real man is about being true to yourself first. It means finding strength from living authentically and then sharing that strength with others. Being a real man means understanding who you are and how to influence the world for the better. A real man is an asset to those around him. He doesn’t have to “take charge” but he leads the charge, and people want to join in. A real man draws people in. In fact, he is completely irresistible. Men may feel like they have lost the permission they once had to be men, but I’m here to tell you that you don’t need permission. You don’t need anyone authorizing you to be who you were meant to be. It’s time to stop trying to please everyone else. It’s time to stop apologizing for thinking like a man, acting like a man, and being a man. It’s time to MAN UP!
Much has been written regarding the New Woman in the fin de siècle and the changes women’s groups fought so hard to achieve. However, the social and gender changes demanded by women as the nineteenth century drew to a close necessitated a corresponding change in traditional masculinities. Redefinition of the male role was not easily negotiated in an era of rampant patriarchy and Victorian supremacy; the distinct boundaries between male and female social space made this increasingly problematic for both genders. Some Victorian men, who had seen the public sphere as exclusively theirs, felt both their masculinity and male privilege threatened and were confused by women’s challenges and their attempted encroachment into what had previously been perceived as solely male domains. While many female authors explored possibilities for the New Woman figure, as the fin de siècle approached, male authors began to consider how masculinities might respond to changing gender dynamics. Authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Bram Stoker, amongst others, addressed ways in which their male characters could negotiate a quandary of masculinities under threat by alterations to conventional gender spheres while remaining “manly” in situations which required a rethinking of many of their basic tenets during this time of flux. This book examines the opinions of women within both the dominant and reverse discourses, and parallels them with ideas surrounding changes in masculinities that began to emerge in male-authored texts. As such, it details an often vociferous negotiation of volatile issues which led to a major upheaval of gender roles in the approach to a new century that demanded changes which were difficult to achieve.

One Four Man Up is about a young man who decided to join the Marines in 1967. After being trained as a radio telegraph operator, he was sent to Vietnam in April 1968. During his 13 month tour of duty, he endured constant combat, was wounded in action, and saw buddies killed. Upon his return, he was treated poorly, could not talk to anyone about his experiences, and suffered terrible Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It wasn't until 20 years later that he was able to come full circle and receive the welcome home he had longed to receive when he marched in a parade in Washington, DC on the 4th of July. Read the intense combat scenes this man endured and learn what finally enabled him to rid himself of the many years of PTSD that haunted him.
Our society is being crippled with a disease that is pandemic. This malady is manifesting itself as an attitude of irresponsibility. It's always somebody else's fault, not mine. Someone else is to blame, not me. The only way to counter this mindset is for true men to stand up and take responsibility for our choices and our actions. This can only happen if we take ownership of every aspect of our life. The purpose of this book is to incite men to action, especially men of faith, to set aside our cultural and even religious stereotypes of "manhood" and take up the charge and calling of becoming an ultimate man. Do you have the desire to rise up and become a real man, but may not know how? Are you tired of fighting addictions and bad habits that keep you from living up to your fullest potential? Are you ready to become a spiritual Gladiator and a William Wallace for your generation? Then this book is for you.
