The purpose of this work is to make this new edition of Katzenberger's biography of Major David Ziegler again available and accessible. Published in the early 1900's, this biography has long since been out of print. Born close to two and a half centuries ago in Heidelberg, Germany, David Ziegler played an important role in the American Revolution, American frontier history and in early Cincinnati history. Part One contains comments by the editor with regard to the life and work of Ziegler and the various works which have been written about him in the German and the English languages since the nineteenth century. Part Two forms the main body of the work, and contains the biography of Katzenberger. In Part Three the concluding commentary of the editor can be found. This is followed by notes with additional historical commentary by the editor.

In 1791, Revolutionary War commander Arthur St Clair led a hastily recruited American army into Ohio in an attempt to wrest control of the area from its Indian inhabitants. Hindered by geographical ignorance, difficult terrain, bad weather, and a lack of supplies, the Americans advanced slowly through the wilderness. After a month, they reached the Wabash River, where an Indian army awaited them. On a cold November morning, the Indians attacked at dawn and three hours later the Americans fled, having suffered more than 60 percent casualties. In this book, author John F.
