It is my profound privilege to present before the esteemed readers the English translation of the most inspiring and enlightening ancient classic Maansagari which was composed by Janardan Harji, the son of a head priest from Gujarat who was a devout scholar of Vedic Sastras and was known for his great virtues. Maansagari Paddhiti as the textual nomenclature suggests is the unique system of delineating horoscopes. It is a complete text explaining the use of many Yogas, different Dasa systems, transits as such and various Chakras. There is no other text that deals with all these lesser known tools of astrological prognostication namely Vargas, Dasas and Chakras. In this translation, all possible cross-references are cited to present the views of other writers as well as an explanation of the principles through examples and horoscopes that have been presented, for use by the students and scholars.

Although the exact origin of this text is not Known, some scholars trace it to the 16th century. This is Volume 2 of a total 2 volumes of this Title. The special focus of this book is to make the ardent readers aware of the salient features of this Vedic text on astrology and how it is distinct from the other transcripts on the subject, available thus far. Great concerted efforts were made to collect, collate and combine all the available manuscripts and other related published material contributed by the eminent contemporary writers and commentators and then the sequence of subject matters is aligned to make it comprehensible and authentic. The name of this holistic text is also as per the ancient statement and record, namely ‘Parasara Hora’. This book adduces certain critical and important features which were never attempted before. This book in one hundred chapters falls in line with the description or narration: “होरा शताध्यायी सर्व पाप विनाशिनी verse as appeared in the Uttara Khanda of the text collated by Shridhar. Amongst the other contemporary writers of such treatise, Sitaram Jha, Devchandra Jha, Tarachand Shastri to name a few, have formatted this text covering between 71 and 101 chapters, but in most of the cases 20 odd chapters were not from ‘Hora Shastra’. These details are available in the introductory note: ‘The specialties of this book’. This note also minutely explains the deletion of inapt Shlokas, the addition of relevant Shlokas and also some Shlokas have been rearranged purposefully so are the chapters. Besides, the treatment of some of the subjects is so unique that will fill the void for the readers to experience. These 20 odd supplementary researched chapters culled out of the published and manuscript materials are unavailable in any text of the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS) of the present time. Trust with this value addition, the esteem readers will get immensely benefited.

Phaldeepika by Gopesh Kumar Ojha Published by Motilal Banarsidass, Delhi (www.mlbd.co.in) Mantreswar was the greatest astrologer of the 12th century from the South of India. He compiled in Sanskrit the principles of Predictive Astrology propagated by Maharshi Parashar, Jaimini and various other great astrologers in his famous work Phaldeepika. This is one of the best books on Predictive Astrology. It includes the essence of Parashar, Jaimini and many more masters. Four hundred and fifty Yogas of Bhavartha Ratnakar of Shri Ramanuja have been added to befit the title Phaldeepika; Bhavartha Bodhini. The 28 chapters in the book cover various topics: the characteristics, house divisions, strength of planets, career, various yogas, raja yogas, marriage, children, longevity, periodic influence of planets, the effect of transits and ashtakvargas. The 11th chapter exclusively deals with the nativity of women; the 22nd chapter gives the interpretations and calculation of the Kalachakra dashas. This English edition also includes many horoscopes, tables and a glossary of Sanskrit and Hindi words. The language is easy to understand and even beginners after studying this book for a few months will be able to arrive at the right interpretations and timing of events.

It contains numerous and precise descriptions of villages and towns as well as of temples, houses, mansions and palaces. It gives indications for the selection of proper orientation, correct dimensions, and appropriate materials. It intends to be a manual for the architect and a guidebook for the layman. Well thought of by traditional architects (sthapati-s) of South India, the treatise is of great interest at a time when technical traditions, in all fields, are being scrutinized for their possible modern application. The present bilingual edition prepared by Dr Bruno Dagens contains critically edited Sanskrit text which is an improvement over the earlier edition by the same scholar and published as No.40 of Publications de L'Institut Francaisd' Indologie, Pondicherry. The English translation, also published earlier, has now been revised with copious notes. The usefulness of the edition has been further enhanced by adding an analytical table of contents and a comprehensive glossary. In the series of Kalamulasastra early texts on music, namely, Matralaksanam, Dattilam and Brhaddest, have been published. The medieval texts on music, especially, the Sribastamuktavali (No.3 in the series) and the Nartananirnaya (No.17 in the series), bring us up to the 15th and 16th centuries. In the case of architecture, despite the IGNCA's endeavour to publish portions of the Brhatsamhita, the Agni Purana and the Visnudharmottara-Purana, first, this has not been possible. Instead, our scholars were able to complete work first on a late but important text, namely, Silparatnakosa. We hope that the sections on architecture in the Brhatsamhita, the Agni Purana and the Visnudharmottara-Purana which predate the medieval texts, will be published soon, along with revised and re-edited texts of Manasollasa and Aparajitaprccha.
