Lament, mourning, and the transmissibility of a tradition in the aftermath of destruction are prominent themes in Jewish thought. The corpus of lament literature, building upon and transforming the biblical Book of Lamentations, provides a unique lens for thinking about the relationships between destruction and renewal, mourning and remembrance, loss and redemption, expression and the inexpressible. This anthology features four texts by Gershom Scholem on lament, translated here for the first time into English. The volume also includes original essays by leading scholars, which interpret Scholem’s texts and situate them in relation to other Weimar-era Jewish thinkers, including Walter Benjamin, Franz Rosenzweig, Franz Kafka, and Paul Celan, who drew on the textual traditions of lament to respond to the destruction and upheavals of the early twentieth century. Also included are studies on the textual tradition of lament in Judaism, from biblical, rabbinic, and medieval lamentations to contemporary Yemenite women’s laments. This collection, unified by its strong thematic focus on lament, shows the fruitfulness of studying contemporary and modern texts alongside the traditional textual sources that informed them.
A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL FULL OF ROMANCE, MYSTERY, TRAVELS, AND ADVENTURE! Luna is hiding a mystery, and that mystery is matter of life or death, a secret which has forced her to live isolated her entire life. But the time has come for her to escape that seclusion, and through her escape she will discover her identity, love, and an entire world which she has been denied for so many years. Who am I? Where am I from? What do I believe in? What is love? These are some questions that Luna will answer for herself as she travels throughout Europe on her way to find the prophecy that has always haunted her. “Readers will discover some wonderful European cities and feel as if they already have been there.” “This is a great back in time travel to the late 1990s!” “A novel that, without being a self-help book, motivates reflection. You might feel identified with many of the emotions embodied in the story.”
If I can put in words how I didn’t think I didn’t feel but you cleared my void and took me somewhere I didn’t know I could and I felt beautiful and I felt but never will again, and I forgot myself and my mind stopped anxiety didn’t exist, thoughts evaporated into mist, into your oblivion, into your circle of safety and I forgot who I was or who I had to be and I allowed you in. And that was not sex, it was just being with you, a lady who made me feel like a woman. Words fail me.
Is there anything you can do about it if your fated mate happens to be the son of the people who you believe killed your parents? "I, Hades Alexios, the future Alpha of Silver Bow Pack, rejected you, Gloria Alvander as my mate," he stated while looking at me. The history of English song from the late nineteenth century to the Second World War.
Drawing upon poststructuralist theories of nationalism and national identity developed by such writers as Etienne Balibar, Emmanuel Levinas, Julia Kristeva, Antonio Negri, and Slavoj Zizek, noted Renaissance scholar William J. Kennedy argues that the Petrarchan sonnet serves as a site for early modern expressions of national sentiment in Italy, France, England, Spain, and Germany. Kennedy pursues this argument through historical research into Renaissance commentaries on Petrarch's poetry and critical studies of such poets as Lorenzo de' Medici, Joachim du Bellay and the Pléiade brigade, Philip and Mary Sidney, and Mary Wroth. Kennedy begins with a survey of Petrarch's poetry and its citation in Italy, explaining how major commentators tried to present Petrarch as a spokesperson for competing versions of national identity. He then shows how Petrarch's model helped define social class, political power, and national identity in mid-sixteenth-century France, particularly in the nationalistic sonnet cycles of Joachim Du Bellay. Finally, Kennedy discusses how Philip Sidney and his sister Mary and niece Mary Wroth reworked Petrarch's model to secure their family's involvement in forging a national policy under Elizabeth I and James I . Treating the subject of early modern national expression from a broad comparative perspective, The Site of Petrarchism will be of interest to scholars of late medieval and early modern literature in Europe, historians of culture, and critical theorists.
