Explores the worldwide popularity of the love-lock as a ritual token of love and commitment by considering its history, symbolism, and heritage. “[T]his is an eminently enjoyable and thorough investigation of a popular phenomenon through the lens of heritage and folk tradition.”—Sara De Nardi, Western Sydney University A padlock is a mundane object, designed to fulfil a specific – and secular – purpose. A contemporary custom has given padlocks new significance. This custom is ‘love-locking’, where padlocks are engraved with names and attached to bridges in declaration of romantic commitment. This custom became popular in the 2000s, and its dissemination was rapid, geographically unbound, and highly divisive, with love-locks emerging in locations as diverse as Paris and Taiwan; New York and Seoul; Melbourne and Moscow. From the introduction: I was distractedly perusing the photo frame aisle, my eyes skimming the generically sentimental stock pictures of happy families smiling at the camera, pretty landscapes, cute pets and couples walking hand-in-hand, when I came across one that jumped out at me.... I recognised the image instantly as a photograph of love-locks: the padlocks that had been appearing en masse on bridges and other public structures on a global scale since the early 2000s. And, having been researching the custom known as lovelocking for about five years at that point, it was with a peculiar sense of pride that I realised love-locks had accomplished the status of a stock image.

Especially now that she has started chatting online with one of the other players, an intriguing rogue who calls himself the Elf. But closing herself off from the people around her doesn’t mean she’s safe, as Marnie soon discovers. Kidnapped and locked inside an empty basement cell, Marnie is forced to confront painful truths about herself and her famous mother as she desperately tries to escape her jailer. Oh, how little her cyber-adventure game has prepared her for this real-life dungeon!
Having lived with these circumstances in my young life has enabled me to write this book. I love helping others. If my life experiences can help any young child, the book has been worth my time and effort. My goal is to reach young children in a way that they may reach out to a professional for help. Writing this book and taking the photographs has been a complete joy. My mother is still living, but my father, two brothers, and sister are all deceased. I have been a resident of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, since 1998. I assist my husband, Dr. Stan Hufford, in his chiropractic practice. I have two living daughters and a son who is deceased. I am blessed to have two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. I also have four stepchildren and eleven step-grandchildren. I enjoy fishing, painting, singing, and writing.
Throughout my life I have gone through many highs and lows. I battled depression, heart-break, and loss for many years. Then God found me, saved me, and called me to a life driven by his grace and love. All these experiences have been blended together in my poetry, and this book is simply the culmination of everything that has been swimming in my head since I was very young. Poetry is the reflection of my soul, my emotions, and my love for Jesus. I hope you enjoy and thank you for reading!
In 1972, when James Lovelock first proposed the Gaia hypothesis--the idea that the Earth is a living organism that maintains conditions suitable for life--he was ridiculed by the scientific establishment. Today Lovelock's revolutionary insight, though still extremely controversial, is recognized as one of the most creative, provocative, and captivating scientific ideas of our time. James Lovelock tells for the first time the whole story of this maverick scientist's life and how it served as a unique preparation for the idea of Gaia. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Lovelock himself and unprecedented access to his private papers, John and Mary Gribbin paint an intimate and fascinating portrait of a restless, uniquely gifted freethinker. In a lifetime spanning almost a century, Lovelock has followed a career path that led him from chemistry, to medicine, to engineering, to space science. He worked for the British secret service and contributed to the success of the D-Day landings in World War II. He was a medical experimenter and an accomplished inventor. And he was working with NASA on methods for finding possible life on Mars when he struck upon the idea of Gaia, conceiving of the Earth as a vast, living, self-regulating system. Deftly framed within the context of today's mounting global-warming crisis, James Lovelock traces the intertwining trajectories of Lovelock's life and the famous idea it brought forth, which continues to provoke passionate debate about the nature and future of life on our planet.
