Working for an American branch of Lloyds' insurers, Owen Jephson is used to underwriting unusual things-weight loss in actors, inconvenient rain at garden parties, twins in the family-nonetheless he is taken aback when Lord Harrowby asks him to insure against his fiancée jilting him at the altar. Never one to turn down an interesting offer, Jephson agrees, but swiftly dispatches Dick Minot to Florida to make sure that Lloyds' assets are protected and that Cynthia Meyrick makes it down the aisle. Unfortunately Minot promptly falls in love with Cynthia after accidentally meeting her on a train, and has to decide where his loyalties lie-should he sabotage or support the wedding, especially as it comes to light Lord Harrowby may not be all that he seems? This light, sophisticated romcom is guaranteed to charm readers
Lord Allan Harrowby, upon arriving in America to wed an heiress, goes to the New York office of Lloyd's of London and insures against the lady changing her mind. Dick Minot, assistant manager of the office, is assigned to the task of preventing that occurrence. He meets Cynthia Meyrick, the lady in question, but not knowing her identity falls in love with her. However, business is his first thought and when she decides that she does not love her fiancé and is about to break her engagement, he does all in his power to bring about the wedding. This involves defeating a stranger who claims to be the real Lord Harrowby, outwitting a customs official who seeks to arrest the nobleman for smuggling in a diamond necklace, the routing of a clever criminal who tries to steal the necklace, and effecting the dismissal of a young woman who threatens a suit for breach of promise. After all this is effected and the wedding about to proceed, Cynthia again changes her mind, but this time it is because of an act by Harrowby. By the terms of the policy, this releases the company, so Dick presents his own case to Cynthia, which she accepts and they elope.

The son of Robert J. and Emma E. (Derr) Biggers, Earl Derr Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio, and graduated from Harvard University in 1907. Many of his plays and novels were made into movies. He was posthumously inducted into the Warren City Schools Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. His novel Seven Keys to Baldpate led to seven films of the same title and at least two with different titles (House of the Long Shadows, Haunted Honeymoon) but essentially equivalent plots. George M. Cohan adapted the novel as an occasionally revived stage play of the same name. Cohan starred in the 1917 film version (one of his rare screen appearances) and the film version he later wrote (released in 1935) is perhaps the best known of the seven film versions. Biggers lived in San Marino, California, and died in a Pasadena, California, hospital after suffering a heart attack in Palm Springs, California. He was 48.
