He was one of the first mercenaries-adventurers-writers in the twentieth century. He ushered in the century of the visual arts and show business. He relentlessly promoted his own legend. Sixty years ago, on July 2nd 1961, Ernest Hemingway shot himself in the head, deprived as he was of the only thing he truly valued: writing. The key events of a life "constructed" like a Hollywood screenplay provide a story line meant to gradually disclose the reason why a 1954 Nobel Prize winner who proclaimed himself "the greatest writer of his time" finally decided to bow out at the age of sixty one. This investigation, exploring the "mechanics" and the psyche of an idol with feet of clay, is based on biographical information as well as testimonies and documents. It should be of interest to aficionados of the writer as well as to readers keen to immerse themselves in the hectic life of a fascinating creative "ogre".

A funny, frank and bittersweet look at sisters, marriage and moving on, from the New York Times bestselling author of the Blue Heron series Letting go of her ex-husband is harder than wedding-dress designer Jenny Tate expected…especially since his new wife wants to be Jenny's new best friend. Needing closure, Jenny trades the Manhattan skyline for her hometown up the Hudson, where she'll start her own business and bask in her sister Rachel's picture-perfect family life…and maybe even find a little romance of her own with Leo, her downstairs neighbor, who's utterly irresistible and annoyingly distant at the same time. Rachel's idyllic marriage, however, is imploding after she discovers what looks like her husband's infidelity. She always thought she'd walk away in this situation but now she's wavering, much to Jenny's surprise. Rachel points to their parents' perfect marriage as a shining example of patience and forgiveness; but to protect her sister, Jenny may have to tarnish that memory—and their relationship—and reveal a family secret she's been keeping since childhood. Both Rachel and Jenny will have to come to terms with the past and the present, and find a way to help each other get what they want most of all.
Dear readers, This story is very personal to me. It starts with the tales of young Leo Bryant, which by the way is the name of my great-grandson, and includes many characters in his early years. Most of the facts in this story are related to my father, who was born on August 20, 1927, just as Leo was, whose father’s name was the name of my father and myself. Having read extensively on the subject of the United Mine Workers of America, of which I am a current member, having worked in the coal mines for fourteen years on various assignments, and being forced out by injuries, of which there are many in the coal mining industry, I believe I am qualified as a man who knows the facts of the mine wars. Many of the historical facts in this story are true, for example, the Blair Mountain Massacre in which quite a few miners were killed or injured by the coal company thugs, including Sheriff Don Chafin whose sole responsibility was to keep the union out of Logan County, West Virginia. I hope you read and enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thanks. Tom Leo Gilco Jr.
“A Hollywood hit….Taut, inimitable prose and characters who could have only sprung from the mind of Elmore Leonard.” —Detroit News The Chicago Tribune has dubbed Elmore Leonard, “the coolest, hottest writer in America.” In the same league as the legendary great ones—John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain—the “King Daddy of crime writers” (Seattle Times) demonstrates his remarkable mastery with Get Shorty, one of the most adored of his forty-plus novels. The basis of the hit movie starring John Travolta and Danny DeVito, Get Shorty chronicles the over-the-top, sometimes violent Hollywood misadventures of a Florida mob loan shark who chases a deadbeat client all the way to Tinseltown and decides to stick around and make movies. Get Shorty’s shylock protagonist, Chili Palmer, is a truly inspired creation—as memorable as another unforgettable Leonard hero, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens of the hit TV series Justified—and readers will relish his moves and countermoves in this electrifying, funny, bullet train-paced winner from “the greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever!” (New York Times Book Review)
