Perspectives in Computing: Locking Performance in Centralized Databases reports some results from a project whose aim was the development of a performance model for concurrency control algorithms. This book proposes a model that is powerful enough to help users understand, compare, and control the performance of the algorithms. Organized into four chapters, this book begins with an overview of the model in its simplest form. This text then explains locking, which uses a combination of blocking and restarts to achieve correctness. Other chapters test the model and the method of analysis by comparing the model's predictions to simulation results wherein the prediction and simulations indicate that restarts can cause thrashing. This book discusses as well the formula for throughput and for the restart rate. The final chapter deals with the adaptation of the model to timestamping and distributed algorithms. With the proliferation of ISDN and mobile communication systems, modern commu nication networks are becoming larger-scale, higher-speed, and more complex than ever before. Therefore, besides hardware development, extensive research on system technolo gies with respect to the performance evaluation and management is indispensable for the proper design, development and operation of future complex communication networks. The International Conference on the Performance and Management of Complex Com munication Systems (PMCCN '97) was held from November 17 to 21, 1997, at Tsukuba Science City, Japan. This was the fifth international conference on the performance as pects of communication networks held every three years in Japan (1985 in Tokyo; 1988, 1991, and 1994 in Kyoto). The conference was sponsored by the International Federa tion of Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group (WG) 6.3 Performance of Com munication Systems, and 7.3 Computer System Modelling, University of Tsukuba, Kyoto University, and The Telecommunication Advancement Foundation (TAF).

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applcations, DEXA 2003, held in Prague, Czech Republic, in September 2003. The 91 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper and a position paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 236 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on XML, data modeling, spatial database systems, mobile computing, transactions, bioinformatics, information retrieval, multimedia databases, Web applications, ontologies, object-oriented databases, query optimization, workflow systems, knowledge engineering, and security.
The Database and Expert Systems Applications - DEXA - conferences are dedi cated to providing an international forum for the presentation of applications in the database and expert systems field, for the exchange of ideas and experiences, and for defining requirements for the future systems in these fields. After the very promising DEXA 90 in Vienna, Austria, we hope to have successfully established wjth this year's DEXA 91 a stage where scientists from diverse fields interested in application-oriented research can present and discuss their work. This year there was a total of more than 250 submitted papers from 28 different countries, in all continents. Only 98 of the papers could be accepted. The collection of papers in these proceedings offers a cross-section of the issues facing the area of databases and expert systems, i.e., topics of basic research interest on one hand and questions occurring when developing applications on the other. Major credit for the success of the conference goes to all of our colleagues who submitted papers for consideration and to those who have organized and chaired the panel sessions. Many persons contributed numerous hours to organize this conference. The names of most of them will appear on the following pages.
