Living the Brat Life" is not your ordinary back to school journal - it's your very own space to share all the cool stuff about being a military brat! Jot down your moves to new places, draw awesome friends you've made worldwide, and remember those funny traditions. Scribble, doodle, and create - no rules, just fun!
With hundreds of thousands of current and former military brats in the United States, their lives as children of service members are surprisingly little documented. Reading about the experiences of fellow brats can help these children of warriors understand both themselves and the unique world in which they were raised. Learning of the challenges that these children face will also help the general population consider how to honor and to help those whose lives were shaped by the military without volunteering or being drafted. This book explores the military brat experience as reflected in novels intended for adults, adolescent fiction, autobiographies and biographies, and highlights the common elements: frequent moves, the ever-present sense of danger, the potential loss of the service member, and isolation from the larger civilian world. By understanding the lives of brats, we can better understand the very real costs--beyond the lives of service members themselves--that families bear in the name of our collective freedom and security.
This extraordinary real-life memoir is about overcoming obstacles, victory, and defeat, an inspirational family narrative, and a historical trajectory of facts and culture in the US from the 1950s to the present time. There are undertones of a yearning for a return to the more civilized society that baby boomers grew up in. As the wife of the man, who after climbing the corporate ladder for years became the president of Mack Trucks Inc., the author had to uproot four children and move many times
A teenage son makes a strange discovery one morning at the back of his parents closet. Wrapped in red silk and hidden beneath a pile of old photos is a beautiful samurai sword in its scabbard. When the boy confronts his father with his discovery, he soon learns the tragic story behind its acquisition and its villainous former owner. His fathers tale of one mans ultimate devotion to the woman he loves and the sacrifices he was willing to make in her name begins to unfold, changing the boy forever. Nate Walker had lived a lonely existence, tormented for much of his young life by the nightmares of an abusive childhood and his bouts with his personal demons. But when Sarah Ross entered his life by chance and fell in love with him, his life suddenly took on a whole new meaning. A lifetime of happiness no longer seemed an unattainable dream. Little did Nate know, however, that a lone bullet fired on a warm summer night in Las Vegas would drastically alter his life and threaten to destroy his future with the woman he loves more than life itself. The shadows from her past would catch up to them in the worst way possible. After burying his older brother, Mark ODane, Sarahs ex-fianc and the youngest son of a casino magnate, launches a desperate ploy to win her back. Despite his associates dire warnings, ODane turns to his fathers sinister chief enforcer, Dante Medina, to deliver Sarah an invitation to his party in Las Vegas, an invitation he knows she would not dare refuse. When the sadistic killer arrives in town, she has no choice but to accept his summons in fear of a violent reprisal against Nate and his loved ones. After setting in motion a disastrous last-minute attempt to see Sarah before her departure, Nate and his friends, Mitch Green and Roy Tucker, launch a frantic plan of their own to find her and, at the same time, protect their loved ones at home from retaliation. Broken and afraid, Nate and Sarah find their way back to each other, but are burdened with the haunting knowledge that the true horror Dante threatened to unleash is only just beginning. Volume I comes to a tumultuous end, but the tale of the samurai sword is only halfway complete. The epic love story concludes in volume II.
Jack McMasters and his two sisters are forced to leave behind every friend they have when they are once again moved halfway around the world -- this time to post-WWII Germany. Their father is a tank commander defending against 3,000 enemy tanks -- pointed directly at them. Theirs is a life of adventure, spies, making new friends, and dealing with their own set of enemies . . . always requiring serious ingenuity if these military brats are to survive this war zone.
Military brats' childhoods are often scarred by alcoholism, abuse, and an ever-present threat of a parent's loss to war. This eye-opening, sometimes shocking exploration tells what life is really like for the stepchildren of Uncle Sam. A new recovery group, Adult Children of Military Personnel, Inc., has been formed as a direct result of this book's publication.
Adult children of military personnel describe their growing up in a military family and how it affects their lives today.
