Lushly evocative of Nicaragua, its tumultuous history, and vibrant present, Eleni N. Gage's The Ladies of Managua brings you into the lives of three strong and magnetic women, as they uncover the ramifications of the choices they made in their pasts and begin to understand the ways in which love can shape their futures. When Maria Vazquez returns to Nicaragua for her beloved grandfather's funeral, she brings with her a mysterious package from her grandmother's past—and a secret of her own. And she also carries the burden of her tense relationship with her mother Ninexin, once a storied revolutionary, now a tireless government employee. Between Maria and Ninexin lies a chasm created by the death of Maria's father, who was killed during the revolution when Maria was an infant, leaving her to be raised by her grandmother Isabela as Ninexin worked to build the new Nicaragua. As Ninexin tries to reach her daughter, and Maria wrestles with her expectations for her romance with an older man, Isabela, the mourning widow, is lost in memories of attending boarding school in 1950's New Orleans, where she loved and lost almost sixty years ago. When the three women come together to bid farewell to the man who anchored their family, they are forced to confront their complicated, passionate relationships with each other and with their country—and to reveal the secrets that each of them have worked to conceal.
Living in Nicaragua tells two stories. The first is my work as an agricultural missionary managing a small farm on the outskirts of Managua. The second tells the stories of several short-term assignments with the U.S. government in Eastern Europe, Africa, South America and Central America. I had already served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador and spoke Spanish fluently. We were in the second year of a drought; therefore, there was not much we could do regarding planting garden or grain crops to sell in the local market. The entire area had grass growing on it. We bought a milk cow and sold milk. We needed more animals to eat all the available grass. I was worried about what the cows would eat during the dry season. With much difficulty, we tried to grow garden crops and sell milk. Needing transportation, I flew to Panama and bought a motorcycle in the Canal Zone and drove it up the Pan American highway to Managua. I had motor problems and had to sleep in the rain forest until my cycle was repaired. We worked to develop the farm to help the local small farmers learn best practices in production and marketing.
Are you living in Nicaragua? Maybe you are an expat, a foreigner, living there and you need a way to make some income. Did you know that you can make a living without a job? In the 21st Century it is very possible to make money in ways which don't require you to get a job! My name is Bob Martin. I am an American, but have lived in a number of countries as an expat. I make a good living and I have not had a job for many years! You can do it too, and I will show you how! My book, 49 Ways to Make a Living Without a Job will show you 49 different ways that you can do what I do - make a living without getting tied down by a job! My previous edition of this book was called "49 Ways to Make a Living in the Philippines" because I have lived in the Philippines for many years. Many people who read the book told me that it was not about making a living in the Philippines. They all said that it could be used to make a living anywhere in the world! They encouraged me to change it up a bit for the next edition, so I did! I updated all of my ideas, I took out references specifically to the Philippines and made the book completely applicable to a world where people need to make a living, and can do it in non-traditional ways! Start making a good living today, without having to answer to anybody but yourself! You can do it! I know for sure you can, because it is what I have been doing for years! Get all of my secrets when you read the book!
