Excerpt from List of Serials in the University of California Library The form of this list is due to the circumstances of its origin. It was drawn up primarily for the use of the Library Committee in distributing book funds and revising the subscription list, and as the records forming its basis were scattered as well as incomplete, work on the list was constantly delayed by the necessity for previous overhauling of the fundamental records; an undertaking by its very nature both tedious and difficult. Since both phases of the work were carried on under high pressure it is probable that the list contains some errors. The librarians will be grateful for notice of any such errors which may be detected, as it is intended that this list shall be one of the bases of the projected new edition of the Cooperative List of Periodical Literature in Libraries of Central California, now eleven years old and, owing to its age and to the disaster of 1906, of little practical use in its present form. In the compilation of this list much assistance was derived from the follow ing publications: A List of Serials in Public Libraries of Chicago and Evanston. Chicago 1901. The John Crerar Library Supplement to the List of Serials in Public Libraries of Chicago and Evanston. Ed. 2. Chicago 1906. List of Serials in the University of Illinois Library. Urbana-champaign 1911. A List of Serials in the Principal Libraries of Philadelphia and its Vicinity. Phila. 1908; and Supplement, 1910. A List of Periodicals, Newspapers, Transactions, and Other Serial Publi cations Currently Received in the Principal Libraries of Boston and Vicinity. Boston 1897. Catalogue of the Periodicals and Other Serial Publications in the Library of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Washington 1901. The work was carried on under the supervision of Frank M. Bumstead, in charge of the Periodical department, by Misses Alice I. Lyser and Edna L. Goss, to whom acknowledgment is due for faithful and conscientious performance.
