Excerpt from The Ladye Lillian, and Other Poems With you, kind reader, who may honor these pages with a perusal, I would have a word of prefatory and familiar chat - not by way of explaining the poems, for I venture to hope that they will be found of themselves sufficiently intelligible. I wish only to say that it is with some little trembling for the success of the venture that this work is launched upon the sea of Literature. Whether it is to be wafted safely into port by the genial breeze of public approbation to be wrecked upon the rocks of adverse criticism or - worst fate of all to founder silently in the dead calm of universal indifference time will decide. I hope for the best. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lillian, or the Battle of Life A tall and stately man approached. The bouquet was taken from its concealment and held up to his gaze Please buy, sir? Not even a pleasant word or glance rewarded her. Tears gathered in her eyes, but she wiped them away - young, yet learning the world's first and great lesson, concealment. Poor little Lillian, she could not imagine the unhappy domestic scene in the dwelling of that proud and wealthy aristo crat - once, he would have bought those truly beautiful flowers for his bride - now, she was only an unloved wife, brilliant in society and admired by others, but holding no place in his heart. A group of laughing school girls approached. Oh! They all exclaimed what charming flowers! Come here, let us see them. Obeying the mandate, she drew near. Bouquet after bouquet was examined, then thrown carelessly, even rudely, down, and Lillian dared not expostulate, hoping still that they would take one or all. I will have this, said a tall, rude girl, with a wicked twinkle in her eye, and pay you to-morrow, sis! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Lily of the Valley; Or Margie and I: And Other Poems As through our Southern land they roam But Oh I wish that the War was o'er That we heard no more the cannon's roar That Peace was ours once more. Ah! Now I think I hear The sound Of those bugles clear, And the tread Of bare feet that may never Press the native soil, that now they stain With crimson drops that write, In characters Of light, Their record on each Southern plain.
