Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of Church Life Such discovery is the business of students in ecclesiastical history, and help in this direction is an object designed and desired by the author of the present volume. Our judgment of principles and persons should not be guided by the same rules. Principles are not affected by times and circumstances; they remain unalterable age after age, and what was taught by inspired Apostles remains the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever. -the forget fulness of this has caused more mischief in Christendom than historians have discovered. But individual character is influenced to a wonderful extent by the age in which our lots are cast. Christians of the first six centuries are not to be judged in the same way as Christians of the nineteenth. Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of American Life In America, where there is such a mixture Of all nationalities, we need not be surprised to find that the home life is esteemed by some, while it is held in contempt by others. The Englishman carries in his heart wherever he goes the sacredness Of his home, while the Frenchman is apt to take with him nothing more sacred than a house. In our American life, however, the home is the foundation of the church and the state. As the homes are pure, the churches will be prosperous, and the state permanent. The fourth verse of the 112th Psalm gives us the foundation principle of home happiness. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness. Everything depends upon upright ness Of purpose, thought, character, and that implies right relation between husband and wife, parent and child, brother and sister, master and servant. In proportion as this right relation exists, the home is full of light; when wrong relation exists, it is certain to be full of darkness. Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of Seventy Years I have entitled my book Lights and Shadows of Seventy Years, because it deals With the changes of these years more than my personal work. The record of What I have done Will be of some interest to those Who know me; to others there may be a general interest in a reo ord of changes Which, through the lapse of three-quarters of a century, have taken place in church and society, and our mode of life. It Will be observed by dates, here and there, that What is recorded in these pages has taken form through a period of seven years. Mem ory has been my guide and I have given only sketches of life's journey and experiences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of German Life, Vol. 1 of 2 I was awakened by the ringing of the church bells; and a cold shudder came over me at the thought that one more revolution of the earth would bring with it my fortieth birth-day. In his nineteenth year, the youth is ambitious of the honours of the twentieth, because he feels himself sufficiently qualified for many things for which our law deems him unripe. At nine-and-twenty he re fleets, with some painful sensations, that the thirtieth must close the frivolous career of pleasure. But woe to him who, ten years later, sees the approach of forty sans place, sans h0pe, sans wife, sans every thing. Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of American Life, Vol. 2 of 3 It is, sometimes, agreeable to stray off into the wilderness which fancy creates, to recline in fairy bowers, and to listen to the murmurs of imaginary fountains. When the beaten road becomes tiresome, there are many sunny spots where the pilgrim may loiter with advantage - many shady paths, whose labyrinths may be traced with delight. The mountain and the vale, on whose scenery we gaze enchanted, derive new charms, when their deep caverns and gloomy recesses are peopled with imaginary beings. But above all, the enlivening influence of fancy is felt when it illumines our fire-sides, giving to the wings of time, when they grow heavy, a brighter plumage, and a more sprightly motion. There are seasons, when the spark of life within us, seems to burn with less than its wonted vigour; the blood crawls heavily through the veins; the contagious dullness seizes on our companions, and the sluggish hours roll painfully along. Something more than a common impulse is then required to awaken the indolent mind, and give a new tone to the flagging spirits. If necromancy draws her magic circle, we cheerfully enter the ring; if folly shakes her cap and bells, we are amused; a witch becomes an interesting personage, and we are even agreeably surprised by the companionable qualities of a ghost. Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of American Life, Vol. 1 of 3 But we are savages, and the white people, who are wiser than we are, have a law, by which, if a white man goes ashore upon a new part of the earth, and gives it a name, and buries a bottle, and hoists a flag over it, his tribe have What the savages who dwell in it, and have pursued their prey over it, age after age, have not, according to such law; that is, a full right. Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of American Life, Vol. 3 of 3 The eggs were boiled to his satisfaction, and Mr. Lee ate and pondered over the newspaper by turns. At length, all at once he started up in a violent commotion, and stumped about the room, exclaiming, in an under-tone to himself, Too bad! Too bad l.
