Light up with English: An English Literature workbook for CSEC(R) English B - Prose is the first workbook of its kind to be added to the Caribbean educational landscape. It was designed based on the learning objectives of the CSEC(R) English syllabus in order to make classroom instruction more effective and maximize learning outcomes. It is my aim that while learning the content for the CSEC(R) syllabus, students will make connections to their unique life experiences. Also, they should increase their knowledge and appreciation of the cultures presented in the different short stories and novels. This workbook incorporates activities which cater to the varied intelligences in the classroom. It also incorporates the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT), formative assessment, games, rewards and collaborative learning to make learning more interactive and fun. It is believed that the nature of the activities will allow students to become excited about learning both English Language and Literature. It is my hope that this Workbook will ignite, in students, the desire to do well in English, and the flame will continue to burn outside the classroom and far beyond their high school years.

There have been many great and enduring works of literature by Caribbean authors over the last century. The Caribbean Contemporary Classics collection celebrates these deep and vibrant stories, overflowing with life and acute observations about society. Old Story Time is a Caribbean classic, providing brilliantly entertaining theatre about race, identity, malice, and the redeeming power of love. In this enthralling drama, we progress with Len from poor scholarship boy to successful accountant. We see a similar but opposite shift in George, from wealthy, well-connected schoolboy to double-dealing crook. Len's mother Miss Aggy, the girls he first loves, and the woman he eventually marries, many destinies are entwined with Len's. Misunderstandings can be dangerous, and trust and love need some help to win through. With the help of Pa Ben, our far-seeing narrator, can things end well? Trevor Rhone was a leading dramatist in Jamaica. His sparkling and original talent has won acclaim from critics and audiences worldwide. Suitable for readers aged 14 and above.
Gardening in the Tropics contains a rich Caribbean world in poems offered to readers everywhere. Olive Senior's rich vein of humour can turn wry and then sharp in satire of colour-consciousness, class-consciousness and racism. But her predominant tone is the verbal equivalent of a pair of wide-open arms.
How can educators improve the literacy skills of students in historically underachieving urban high schools? In this timely book, the author offers a theoretical framework for the design of instruction that is both culturally responsive and subject-matter specific, rooted in examples of the implementation of the Cultural Modeling Project. Presented here, the Cultural Modeling Project draws on competencies students already have in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) discourse and hip-hop culture to tackle complex problems in the study of literature. Using vivid descriptions from real classrooms, the author describes how AAVE supported student learning and reasoning; how students in turn responded to the reform initiative; and how teachers adapted the cultural framework to the English/language arts curriculum. While the focus is on literacy and African American students, the book examines the functions of culture in facilitating learning and offers principles for leveraging cultural knowledge in support of subject matter specific to academic learning. This much-awaited book offers important lessons for researchers, school district leaders, and local practitioners regarding the complex ways that cultural knowledge is constructed and plays out in classroom life, in the life of a school, and in the life of a whole-school reform initiative.
