Life skills are the abilities that help in promotion of mental and social wellbeing and competence in women to face the realities of life. The ultimate aim of life skills education is the overall development of women personality which cannot be achieved without exposing women to various life skills. The ten core (generic) Life skills as listed by WHO are self-awareness, Empathy, Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Effective Communication, Interpersonal Relationships, Coping with stress and Managing Emotions. Life skill education lays the foundation for learning skills which enhance self-direction of the individual. It would be a way of empowering women to build their lives and their dreams. It would be a means of handholding them through the critical stages in their life and helping them tap their potential to the fullest. Thereby, it is hoped that the current education system with its oppressive rigidity would open up and make life skills education a part of its mainstream group. This study investigated the experiences of informal learning of life skills, the learning sources and possible empowerment properties on the part of young female migrant workers in China. This study employed a basic interpretive research design, using semi-structured interviews, observations and field notes. The Capability approach provided the conceptual framework underlying the research and analysis. This research found that the migrant women, though impeded by many structural constraints, informally learned and practiced key life skills to some extent as they adjusted to the urban life. Most of them had developed aspirations to learn better communication and occupational skills to integrate better into the urban environment. The sources of learning were confined to rural migrant social network from home, at work and church, the occasional self-help book, and growing phone and Internet use. Informal learning created a fertile space for empowerment, where migrant women enhanced their agency, capabilities and material and inner well-being. Yet, government policy, social-economic and residential segregation often confined the migrants to second-class status in the city and diminished the empowering impact of life skills.This research covered a gap in literature by investigating life skills and capabilities of migrant women and the connections between life skills and empowerment. It applied theory to explain practices and provided theoretical support for the importance of life skills which NGOs failed to address. Moreover, since internal labor migration is undertaking worldwide, this study is useful to suggest explanations of similar phenomena in other countries.
Sustainable Tourism Policy and Planning in Africa offers an accessible and understandable overview of the challenges of integrating sustainability into tourism policy and planning in Sub-Saharan Africa and provides some interesting recommendations on how these could be overcome. Tourism is currently growing faster in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and in many other developing regions compared to the rest of the world. Using case examples from different segments of the tourism sector in different country contexts, this volume therefore reassesses context specific tourism policies and planning mechanisms in SSA over the years. It considers how the increasing focus on sustainability is reflected in different areas of the tourism sector including food security, the human capacity management, service delivery, local communities and heritage management, climate change and the influence of colonial legacies on tourism policy planning. For many SSA countries, it has only been in the last two decades that the development of sustainable and achievable context specific policies and planning mechanisms has become the norm. The chapters provide examples of how different dimensions of sustainability are integrated into tourism policy and practice, and examine the extent to which these are shaping the present, and their implications for the future sustainability of the tourism sector. Sustainable Tourism Policy and Planning in Africa will be of great value to academics, private and third sector employees to better understand tourism in Sub-Saharan Africa. Eight of the chapters were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Planning and Development. These are now complimented with a new introductory chapter and a concluding chapter that sets out a future research agenda for sustainable tourism policy and planning.
