Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Mrs. Sewell When requested by the relatives of my dear friend Mrs. Sewell to write a short memoir of her life, I at first hesitated, not from any unwillingness to undertake so pleasant a task, but because I questioned if a life so quiet and uneventful could furnish sufficient material to ground the hope of obtaining for it general interest. The materials at hand for use were by no means abundant. The bulk of her family correspondence had been destroyed, and she had not escaped the sorrow - the lot of most who live to an advanced age - of seeing her earlier friends drop one by one by the way. There are now few living who remember anything of her earlier life. My own acquaintance with her did not begin until she was upwards of sixty years of age, but the friendship which existed between us for more than a quarter of a century, secured to me the privilege of a very near and intimate acquaintance.
